if not, one could technically get away until they find a shop that's more easy going?

i have 20% tints in the back, and live in MA. I personally don't think it's a big deal, although law is a law. Hmmm..

We charge $26 pass or fail, If you pass it is $2 more for the sticker. This is in PA, every state is different.

You just need to knew the right guy to go to and you could get your car inspected over the phone.

The only inspection I've ever had to do was emissions testing, so I'm not sure what you mean.
I'm in Southern Oregon and the testing is done at a government facility. They don't charge you until you pass.

If you fail, you still have to pay. You do get a free retest though, within a certain time period. Don't remember the exact time, 30 days maybe? If you fail the retest, you'll have to pay for the next test (with a free retest) and so on. Also, you have to go to the same place for the retest...

FYI, I live in MA and had a car that failed a year or 2 ago.

Confirmed. I had a friend who had his car fail, and he had to pay, but they wrote the issues that caused it to fail on the little temporary 30 day sticker they give you to get that stuff fixed. Once he took care of the problems, they just slapped a pass sticker on there.

Unless you know someone you will not pass with the 20%, they have cracked down pretty hard here on inspection...best bet is to ask before having them inspect your car and see what they can do...I think in mass you get 60 days from the first inspection to get the issues resolved but I am not sure, my car just failed last year due to a lack of tire tred and out of alignment...good luck

yes, ofcourse.

That is why most inspection places will ask for money upfront. I moved to NH but my car is still registered in MA. In fact just got my inspection done last friday.

My dad was told his car won't pass upfront(his muffler needed replaced) but he asked him about it first. I guess you can ask them before giving him money.

Depends on the station and possible safety concerns. I had one place tell me they would fail my wife's car because I had the little black plastic vanity plate from the dealer on it (it was a new car). I guess the plastic covered up some writing on the plate. My car has the same thing as her car, passed with flying colors (with the vanity on) at a station near where I work. Go figure.
