I am building a computer and was going to buy an A8N32-SLI deluxe. Someone told me to wait for the M2s first. Is this the new AMD processor for June? Should I wait? Or should I get Opteron 170 now with my above Mobo?

Socket AM2 hasn't shown us anything promising yet. IF you're itching to buy now, go ahead. Opteron 170s are still good.

Also it could prove to be a somewhat immature platform with a few bugs hindering overall system performance, being the mem controllers are a new design etc (mostly an OCing point of view). Socket 939 has matured quite well over the years, and is peaking at the moment.

My personal opinion and one I will stick with is, I don?t believe AMD to bring much or any more competition to the game, until a new core design and 65nm arrives.

The biggest thing I see AM2 bringing us is the ability to get past 3.0. I'm kinda curious if the first chip will be like the 3800 X2 is for overclocking now? The 3800 X2 can be overclocked as high as 2.6-2.8 depending on stepping. Will AMD allow it to be a great overclocker or will they keep it set for minimum overclocking? We know the 4800 X2 and the FX-60 doesnt overclock much more past their set stock core without serious water cooling. It'll be interesting to see how the AM2 overclocks.

From what I've seen, AM2 isn't worth the wait right now. I've also talked to someone with an AM2 board\CPU and he said there's virtually no difference, although it clearly was a test board.

Another thing to consider is that tweaking current AMD CPUs and platforms have pretty much been mastered, with the switch to a new socket (new motherboards/chipsets) and DDR2, we could be diving into totally different waters.

If you're looking to overclock/tweak the system, then you'd be a pioneer unless you wait even longer for others to break the ground so you have an idea of what you're getting into.

I halfway considered waiting for AM2, but after reading everything I could find on it I decided that a high end s939 system would serve me very well and probably save me some money. So I went ahead and built a new system earlier this month and I am SOOOO glad I did.

My recommendation parrots those of the other posters, get what you need now. Prices are right, parts are mature, and your forum support base is stacked.
