Methinks you give them too much credit. My personal theory is that "not immediately available for comment" is closer to "they weren't sitting right next to me as I wrote this". And anyways, what sort of idiot is going to talk to a news reporter about a company executive not having a certain degree when even they don't know the truthfulness of the statement?
