Tonight, I installed XP RC2 (having skipped over RC1). I used the "Upgrade" option to upgrade for Win2k, because I didn't want to lose my programs. Well, XP loaded fine and all, but my sound card ( a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz ) would sometimes produce scrambeled/fzcked-up sounds. Also, some of my desktop shortcuts from Win2k were no longer on the desktop, and some programs that were installed in 2k were not in the start menu OR the desktop in XP. WTF?!?!?! I hate XP... I had to reformat, because of my sound card and the other aforementioned problems. I'm now running 2k again, and I'm afraid to attempt to upgrade again. Was my sound card incompatible? Or did I have bad luck? How can I make XP safe to use so that I won't loose shortcuts and start menu items? HELP!!!

upgrade = bad

Do a fresh XP install.

Turtle Beach has some beta XP drivers that I hear work very well. Grab them from their website.

But XP now lets you do a 'quick' format during install! With W2K you had to sit there forever waiting for the damn thing to finish! :D

No crap? So I can just boot from the XP CD, have it do a quickie format, and then install it "clean"?

The things that I've heard say that XP is basically a prettier edition of 2k. My games still have the same incompatibility problems in XP that they had in 2k. So I'm leaning towards db'ing 98se and 2k... unless there's something else I dont know.

Yes upgrade definately = bad.
And Turtle Beach has different Win2k and WinXP drivers.

Sound Cards are one of the few things that drivers won't be totally compatible with because the Voice Management system is screwed up in Win2k but fully functional in WinXP.

I'm of mixed feelings towards XP...but I'm still leaning towards the sticking to Win2000 option.

As far as programs disappearing from the desktop and start menu, did you by chance miss the "All Programs" button at the bottom of the start menu? All of your programs should be listed there. XP also tries to clean up your desktop for you, which would explain why some things disappeared.

I tried all programs, but some programs still weren't in there. Hmm... well, I'm still not convinced enough to go to XP, but I'm still open to comments. If I do upgrade, I'll just wipe 2k off my partition (only one with an os) and install "clean"
