LVDS: What exactly is it good for?

Looking to pick up an EPIA board, maybe with LVDS, maybe not. Is there any advantage to it, and are there even displays out there that use it? I can't seem to find any!

Short for Low Voltage Differential Signaling, a low noise, low power, low amplitude method for high-speed (gigabits per second) data transmission over copper wire.

A few good things to start with. :D

That helps... but does LVDS have any practical uses? Maybe connecting to an old laptop screen or something? Anything that might be of use to a carputer or something?

Some practical uses and reasons.

Low voltage on signal lines ---> low EMI/RFI emission, low power consumption.
Differential Signals ---> Noise resistant

For a carputer it would be a good serial interface. The LVDS is just a hardware definition. You can run any kind of protocol over it.
