Lunar Eclipse Tonight!

Should ask sooner than now!

You will have to adjust as the eclipse goes to total.

f/5.6, ISO 100, 1/250th to 1/500th for full bright moon - about that.

There's a pretty good site with tons of info.

If you are using a long lens, use a wider aperture like f/5.6 to get more light in - less camera shake affecting shot because you can shoot at 1/500th.

I would try to keep it at 1/200th or faster by adjusting ISO vs. shutter speed, but if you have to go longer then do so before compromising images with noise.

Total cloud cover here unfortunately.

It's freezing as hell here. But totally clear 🙂

I'm going to use my F2.8 70-200 at 200 on a tripod, have a remote switch too, and going to turn on mirror lock up 🙂

Would you go all the way down to F2.8? or stay somewhere around 4 or 5.6?

I'd stay at around 4-5.6. It will be hard to focus at 200mm though. And the moon will not be very large. With my 70-200 and a 2x Teleconverter on my 40D it still isn't all that large.

If you have a 40D - use live view to focus - you can zoom in 10x, and you can move the zoom point around using the joystick to control where it zooms to.

I didnt even know the camera had that sweet! 🙂 I'll have to read the manual quick.

Total cloud cover here as well. I can't even see an aura of the moon through the clouds. 🙁

Take some good pictures for us! 🙂

Yeah I don't use it, but it's great for zooming in and focusing if you're on a tripod or doing macro work.

I set a custom function to make the thumb dial center button bring up live view mode. Handy IMO.

You can try AF but I don't know how well it will work.

I can see a glow, that's it. I REALLY wanted to get some time lapses of this too 🙁

So instead I will be working on making a custom mat for my friends wedding that I've been needing to get done.

200mm isn't long enough. I have a sharp fixed aperture 80-200mm, but I busted out my cheapo 70-300mm to take this; D80 at 300mm, and I had to crop heavily.

It would be long enough for a nice time lapse shot to shot the phases in one photo as the moon moved through the sky. Have to pretty much manufacture the image in photoshop but hey. Just don't expect to get an 8x10 with the moon full size in it and have it looking very detailed.

But yeah as stated my 70-200 w/ 2X TC isn't long enough for my likings.

How is liveview supposed to work? I turned it on in the settings, have my 40D set to AV, but nothing shows up on the LCD 🙁

You have to turn on live view in the menu - maybe it wasn't a custom function....but it's the second yellow config menu. Live View has to be enabled in there. Then hit the set button on the dial.

Another thing that live view can do is use a silent shoot mode - I don't know which mode does this - but it keeps the mirror up indefinitely and just shoots with live view. Less vibration for tripod mounted shots.

Okay it's Mode 1, and when Live View is enabled, that button brings it up - I was thinking of something else in the custom functions.

The "bizzare" noise is probably because the mirror isn't moving up and down like you're used to with normal shooting.

Thats what I did, and when I take photos, they turn out all black.

Take your lens cap off? 😛

What mode were you in?

WTF! My camera didn't save any pictures from the last 20 minutes. The only change I made during that time was to turn mirror lockup on.

What I also don't understand is, I switched to AV for the heck of it, and focused the centerpoint right on the moon. The viewfinder would tell me that it was going to be a 6 or 10 second exposure and it would seem like the shutter was open for 30 seconds.

I wonder if the cold was part of the problem... its 14 degrees here right now...

I put the camera back in the bag and sealed it as soon as I got inside to prevent condensation, but any ideas why the camera would stop taking photos like that?

Doesn't make sense that it would just not save pictures. What kind of memory card?

I've had my camera out in temps like that. It just saps the batteries quicker.

Lens cap was off, and I was in AV. I could see a picture on the opposite wall, but when I pressed the button, it made like a weird grinding noise, then gave me an all black picture.

Transcend. Brand new 4GB card. Its still got 1.2 gigs free on it....

Edit: And I just wrote 200 gigs to it of random files from my computer, so it doesn't appear to be the card.

Well without hearing it I couldn't tell you...

Taking a picture in live view triggers the same events as in regular mode - the only difference is that the mirror is locked up for the whole time and doesn't have to come back down.

If there was a problem with the mechanism, then after the error I'm just about positive you'd get a code flashing on your camera and it wouldn't operate until shut down and turned on.
