Epic fail by MSI

Have a big countdown and then pull it at the last moment.

This is probably not a fail on MSI's part... I'm pretty sure that if Lucid had chips/drivers ready to go, MSI would have launched motherboards with Hydra.

What I really don't get is why MSI/Lucid would put so much pressure on themselves with such a hyped up launch if Lucid wasn't totally sure they could deliver. It seems to me like it would make more sense to to a fairly quiet launch, and then spin up the hype engine once they actually had a product that worked and was available for purchase.

...by the time this thing launches we'll be sick of hearing about it. Same story with Larrabee IMO.

Maybe, but all in all it will still be very cool, if - and that's the problem - if it works as advertised.

Nvidia and AMD maybe aren't that happy about this chip and I assume there are possibilities for them to at least hinder the development, right?

What's AMD got to lose/fear from Lucid's IP?

It's Nvidia that relies on SLI licensing fees and chipset sales for SLI rigs that stands to have some lower-cost alternatives show up and cause lost sales.

I was very optimistic about it but I think this really is not all it was hyped up to be...this delay just strengthens my opinion of it. Maybe the scaling does work but it's so bad that there's no point in releasing anyway. It all sounded too good to be true and that looks like it is the case.

I don't know why, and I may still be proven 100% wrong about this, but for some reason ever since I first started reading about this Lucid chip it has always conjured up images of Killer NIC in my mind.

Did Killer NIC work as advertised? Sure it did, ping times really were reduced and for gamers who really really really cared about that the $100 pricetag was worth the investment. Do even 1% of gamers have Killer NICs in their rig? I doubt it.

Without any technical reasoning whatsoever I can't help but get the feeling that Hydra is the next Killer NIC. It will add value to someone out there for some app of relevance to them, but for the rest of the world it won't justify its cost. (discreet Physx PPU anyone?)
