From my experience, winmodems based on the Lucent chip are less CPU intensive and generally run faster and better. This is a good price. It comes in retail box, but don't expect to recognize the brand. The nice thing about Lucent modems is you can replace the core driver components and get an up-to-date modem, even if the distributor doesn't offer driver updates.

Personally I hate these modems. I work for a tech. support department of an ISP and these things cause huge problems for a lot of clients. I wish they would be done away with. More power to those who get lucky and don't have problems but I wouldn't touch it.

Put me down for a thumbs up on Lucent modems. I've built many low-end systems and have used a variety of low cost modems. There isn't even a contest between the Lucent and any other software driven modem. In fact, it works better than many hardware modems I've tested. Faster connections, consistent download speeds, more robust with noisy lines, etc.
