LTE tablets - just pop a regular sim in?

So I'm saving a lot switching from att to an mvno for about $30 a month all in. No tethering, which is only noticed when we're roadtripping and the kids exhaust their pre-downloaded netflix stash.

Question - if I bought an LTE tablet, can I just plug my existing SIM into said tablet? I can just receive my calls on my wife's phone (google voice) for the drive and let the kids consume data. Or are Sims locked to devices or require 'data only' status to use on tablets?

you really need to ask your carrier that question.

For example, with ATT, i know it can cause issues.
Also the billing would be screwed up, as a BYOD phone and tablet prices are different.
