"Security accounts manager initialization failed because of the following error: The revision level is unknown. Error status: 0xc0000058. Please click OK to shutdown this system and reboot into safe mode, check the event log for more info."

This is the error I get. Windows will post, but the above message appears when the windows is starting up screen appears. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can't get windows to boot in any mode.

Welcome to the Forums :) Was it working before, or is this a new installation that's bombing immediately?

It might help to know these items:

1) What version of Windows (2000, XP Professional, XP Home)

2) What Service Pack level is Windows at (WinXP SP1, SP2, no SP, whatever) and have you kept it up-to-date on the other patches that come between service packs, or not

3) What exact brand and version of antivirus software you have, if any (eg Norton Antivirus 2003, McAfee VirusSan 8.0 Pro, whatever)

4) Do you have a software firewall or not (ZoneAlarm, the WindowsXP firewall, etc)

5) Do you have a broadband connection (cable, DSL) and if so, do you have a router or not

6) If you have a router, do any other computers ever share the Internet connection with your computer.

Windows XP home, SP2, no additional firewall, and not sure about virus protection. I'm working on this for someone else and this is all the info I have. She said it was working fine for 2 weeks after installing SP2 but one day she turned it on and boom no go. Stand alone computer. I search Microsoft knowledge base but found nothing.

A Trojan/virus may have disarmed WinXP's firewall, resulting in it being wide-open to attack from that point forward. She should get a router in the future, like a Netgear RP614. If you can get more info, that would be good.

I believe Sasser usually results in a message that the pc will reboot on its own in 60 seconds. This message is different.

I should say that I used to get lsass.exe sporadic errors on a motherboard that had a bad capacitor.

Inspect the capacitors on her board (hmmm that sounds a little devious, lol). Look for any leakage, or bulging tops. A magnifying glass will help. At least something to rule out.
Dont pooh pooh this because this is a relatively new pc, either. Could happen to any pc.

http://www.badcaps.net can give you an idea of what to look for where bad capacitors are concerned.

There is a lsass that is a worm but this is not the case with my pc. It has to do with security boot isuses but I have not been able to find any info on how to fix this so I am now running a repair reinstall. I hope this works. Thanks to those who have tried to help.

Well that did not work either. Now another problem. When trying the repair install after copying files needed the next screen says "setup can not set the required windows xp configuration information. this indicated an internal setup error." I will now try to use her hard drive in my test machine and see if it boots. If I get the same error I will have to tell her its reformat time.

There are a number of things that you can try, but the most economical will be for you to clean install it. Remember to extract any files that she may need before clean installing!

funny thing I rebooted and windows asked for the install disk which is now running. However, sitting in front is the original error msg. So I am letting it run and will see what happens. The first time I closed the error and the computer rebooted so I am leaving the error msg on screen. I have already backed up her date. The computer is an HP but HP now longer supports it and there is no recover disk. But on a partition on her HD is a recovery section weird. How to access it when the computer won't even boot. Thanks HP.

It would help if you would post exactly what HP model she has.

Also, that setup error message indicates that XP has found some piece of hardware that is installed that is incompatible with XP.

The HP model is a XT983. I have tried everything I can think of and used info giver here but still nothing. What really supprised me was I enterd lsass.exe on Microsoft Knowledge base and nothing about what I am having trouble with. She just called so I am going to do a clean install after I get back from getting my hair cut. I will try this board one more time when I get back, then is clean install time. You have all be great, I am glad I joined this forum. I look forward to helping others and being helped by others. Thanks Again.

By the way, have you tried booting and tapping the F10 key to access the hidden partition for recovery?

Just keep tapping F10 as soon as you start to boot the pc. It should bring you to a recovery prompt.

Also, these pc's seem like they are plagued with all kinds of problems. Read this thread here:

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/foru...1109441373102+28353475&threadId=817083

seems like HP is even replacing these even if out of warranty for some. Read down the thread for the name Gary Cantwell. He's some guy at HP who knows of this model's problems and has helped people get replacements.

Here's his profile page at HP, which includes his email address.

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/foru...icProfile.do?userId=BR701614&forumId=2

Also, as I expected, people with this model HAVE had bad capacitor problems:

http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl...A2005-03%2CGGLD%3Aen&q=XT983+capacitor

You really should inspect that motherboard.
