I have had the HP2100 2 yrs, worked fine and then stopped. I have tried all recommended solutions.
Printer works with latitude notebook and win98. Printer works in DOS on desktop, just not with Win98.
I have replaced HP drivers, port drivers, removed and reinstalled port, printer and formatted and reinstalled win98. Cable is ok.
HP install log reports "port detection failed" MSD.exe reports LPT1 "off line".
Something in Win98 failing to allow port. Device manager says port is functioning and no conflicts.
I have also tried removing registry entries for HP before reinstalling without success.
Anyone have an idea I haven't tried???
Thanks,
Bill Macdonald

Welcome to the forums Bill. It looks like everything is okay. Have you checked the connections inside your computer? For instance, make sure your parallel port is connected to your motherboard and isn't loose. Other than that, if it works on your laptop and your desktop, then there's probably something wrong with the physical port on your computer. Hope this helps. :)

Sorry about the couple blank mesages, had trouble logging in last night altho this morning seems to be fine.
Thanks for our reply, ojai00. The printer port works in DOS as in C:\Dir>Lpt1. Now also seems to work with Notepad in Windows. I have replaced the set of Spool drivers. I have also tried all the variations of Bi-directional support, data type -RAW or EMF, Spool or Print direct to printer, and uninstalled and reinstalled Word.
The fact that the printer now works with Notepad is a major step forward. It does not work with Word or any of my browers ( IE 6 or Netscape 4.72) for the Internet.
My sense is we are back to "Driver" issues. I have d/l the latest from HP and installed/uninstalled/reinstalled over and over again with out success.
The HP install log reports, each time, "port detection failure" and the HP Utility software says there is no printer on my system, even though it shows everywhere else.

What haven't I done here???

Check the bios settings just for kicks, and play with them as well, some printers (Epson for example) would not work unsless you will setup the LPT1 inthe bios to use specific format -EPP...?
