Lowering timing on RAM

My friend has 1GB Corsair Xpert TWINXP1024-3200XL DDR. For some reason he said sometimes 1 of the sticks won't register and sometimes the comp freezes at the boot screen.. so how can he lower the cas timings on the ram to see if that will help?

It depends on the motherboard but it'll be in the BIOS. You'd want to raise the timings. If it's not running according to spec, then you should RMA it. Check the default timings for that RAM. You can use CPU-Z to see what it's currently running.

Also you could try to find out the timings that work well. My ram is rated to run 2-2-2-5 @ 2.7V i guess. But if i try those i get ~5k errors in memtest86 test #5 and i get a bunch of errors if i boot to xp. Since I had to RMA my last pair (2x512) to get this one (that pair was really bad), I didnt RMA them again bcos it works swell 2-2-3-5 @ 2.65V. Zero errors and stable as hell. The performance gain in setting RAS 3-->2 isnt THAT great. Also there could be motherboard issues especially if you are using nF4, like i am.

EDIT:reseating could help too.
