it won't be necessarily out this year, only that they are pursuing it as a priority. And there is much speculation that this is nothing more than the previously announced Comcast/Cox/Tivo box.

All depends on what their definition is of low price. I've never even halfway considered TiVo because of the price. I'm surprised they've stayed afloat this long what with cable and satellite company's offering their own services with typically cheaper monthly rates.

Let's see.....I invest whatever Tivo asks for upfront for their HD Tivo box (still going to be a couple hundred bucks, I'm sure) and I then get to pay their monthly fee along with what Comcast charges me to rent the necessary CableCards. Or I just pay a monthly fee for the HD DVR I have from Comcast now and will have the option of Tivo software in the future for an additional fee. Unless Tivo makes their box free I still don't see widespread adoption in the future. It's way too easy to get the equipment needed at no upfront charge from your current provider plus a fair amount of folks know that Tivo software is being developed for their box should they want to have it.

You mean the monthly price? Because free-after-rebate Tivo's were pretty common.

A Tivo can do a lot of things a cable company DVR can't, which is the main attraction. I use the hell out of my Series 2, but then again, I don't have digital cable or an HDTV.

Exactly. Two Series 2's here, no digital cable, no cable box, no HDTV. Both were free after rebate and I'm not sure how I'd manage without them.

Series 3s are great, if a bit buggy. But nowhere near as buggy as junk like the SA HD DVRs. I'm not sure what all they can remove from the s3 to make it cheaper. Maybe the OLED display on the box itself, and the network card. What else can they realistically remove??

Before we made the leap to HDTV, we used and loved our TiVo series 2.

Although our stand alone TiVo series 2 is retired, we still use our Toshiba SD-H400 mostly because of free Tivo basic. My wife doesn't mind watching her soapies and Rachael Ray in non-HDTV 😛

I got a TiVo instead of my cable company's DVR because with the cable company I would have had to upgraded to digital cable + digital basic + rental fee, and it would have cost me something like $30/month more than what I was paying for just their bare minimum service (with only one additional channel that I'd actually watch).

I understand some people like the TiVo software better than other DVRs, but I don't think it's anything to write home about. It's slow, and I usually don't watch the shows it recommends. I like my HTPC a lot better, except that it's not great for watching sports (not sure why - it just can't keep up).

It takes too long to respond when I hit a button or when I switch from live TV to the TiVo interface. My HTPC is much more responsive.

When I select one of my recordings it takes too long for the show description and options to come up.

Does such a DVR exist where no monthly fees are involved? (besides a bulky HTPC)

Series 2 80 GB. I thought about putting a bigger drive in there, but I use my HTPC for most stuff now anyway. The wife uses the TiVo for her Law & Orders.
