Lower drinking age?

I think the age of 18 is low enough.
It is punishable here when someone sells a sub-18 person alcoholic drinks or cigarettes, but I have never seen a shopkeep or a bartender who obeys that rule. All high school students can get drunk whenever they want. This depends on the youth, not the law.

I think that the age should be RAISED! and enforced! Its amazing how imature people are when they drink, and to drink under age for that matter. I live in a college dorm, and if people followed the law, my life would be so much nicer. All the drunks yelling, and destroying things piss me off. GET A CLUE!

Live a little man, college isn't just about school. I can understand how it would be annoying, but if you were having a good time I don't think you would be bothered by any of it.

I know its not all about school, but its not about drinking either. I dould be fine if peopel drank responsably, but when they destroy things, there is a problem. That is why the drinking age is where its at now. maybe the question is should the drinking age be enforced.

Your logic wouldn't be flawed if those who were old enough to die for their country weren't volunteers. Maybe we should just let those who are in the Service drink at 18.

my understanding is that the reasoning most people use all ties into something about how younger people have poorer judgement (i.e., they're more likely to get piss drunk and drive or something). if we think their judgement is good enough for purposes of joining the military, it seems silly to question their judgement when it comes to something so relatively trivial as having a drink.

Well in the Service those young men and women are taught discipline from day one.That's why I said that those in the Service should be allowed to drink at 18. Those who aren't shouldn't be.

but that's *after* they've already exercised their supposedly inadequate judgement in regards to joining the military. what i'm saying is that if the judgement of 18-20 year olds is so horrible, and that is our rationale behind a drinking age limit, it seems odd that we would deem that very same individual as being capable of making a judgement that is most likely going to have much more and more severe far-reaching affects than a drink ever will.

The service likes their recruits young and impressionable. If they waited for them to turn 21 they'd have a much tougher time molding them to what they consider good soldeirs.

I'll agree with that. 19 does sound better than 18 for the drinking age... most people in high school aren't responsible enough. I think there is a huge maturity gap between high school seniors and freshmen in college even though there isn't much age difference. Not for everyone, there are still plenty of immature people who are older, and mature people who are younger.... but I feel the majority would fit in well with that policy.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Our group has put together a rather good argument thus far and I hope it goes well. I'm still trying to decied where I stand on the topic. While I agree that it should be raised for various reasons, at the same time there's equally as many reasons to lower it.
 
21 drinking age is stupid as hell.. It should be 16 drinking age and 18 driving age.

"Now that they've been driving for a while, give them alcohol." Instead of.. "Now that they've learned to curb their drinking, give them a car."

This is a free country and we have stricter laws than most other countries..
 
When i lived in germany I learned a whole new perspective onit. WHile they consume more alcohol it is more on a social basis and much more responsibly. Also you can drink before you can drive, and learn repsonsibility of drinking before you get the right to drive. And there are much less drunks driving there.
