Low virtual memory in Win2000!!!!!!

Hi, I have a PII 350 with 128MB RAM.

OS is W2000 SP1

Every morning, I have to open at least 3 browsers, FrontPage 2000, PhotoShop 4.0, and Windows Media Player 7.0 with 128kbps video news playing. However, after several hrs, performance degrades and the "low virtual memory" error message Win2000 pops up.

I did nothing to change the virtual memory setting.

But there's only less than 10000K left in the amount of memory available.

Okay, now, do I need more RAM or a new CPU?

I was thinking about upgrading the CPU. What do you think?
 
do both...win2k runs best with about 256 mb of ram. i guarantee you will feel the difference in ram levels if you upgrade to 256. ram is dirt cheap right now so go get some.
 
Thanks people. I think I will go with the extra 128MB RAM.

Do you think I should get the PC100 or PC133 RAM. I have PC100 RAM in my computer. Would mixing the two cause 'inconsistency'?

Best to keep your RAM the same. Also, when you add more RAM increase the VM too. MS recommends RAM+12meg. More is even better. I have 256m RAM and my VM is set to Min & Max at 512m.

i'm runnin w2k adv srv w/ 256 one is pc100 the other is pc133. i put the 133 behind the 100. (0/1)

so if you buy the 133 you're ready for that future upgrade or overclock.
 
also if it says low virtual memory then maybe you're running out of disk space eh. clean some trash out maybe.
 
I have 1.4GB free...

I also increased the VM, but the situation didn't get better.

The low memory seems to be gone, but EVERYTHING's running SLOOOWWWW...

I will get more RAM.
 
If you get your RAM from a local computer shop, not Best Buy or some place like that...

You might be able to talk them into trading in your PC-100 RAM for PC-133 and just pay the difference ($5)...

It's worth a try and there is a slight performance increase as well...
 
usbnuts: What version of Windows media player 7.0 do you have? (Beta or final) I had a user here on my network at work with Windows 2000 and WMP 7 beta, and he would get "low(or)out of virtual memory" after listening to streaming audio on the net for a couple of hours. Do this when it you get a low on virtual memory message or after a while of listening to streaming audio, go to your task manager (ctrl-alt-delete) and click on the processes tab and see how much memory is WMP is taking up. I did that here and WMP was taking about 300megs of memory. I just did a reinstall of the final version and everything is ok now.
 
tcast305: I started WMP and listened to Madonna's 700K DVD streams. The result is my system only had 4000K physical memory left.... I will reinstall the WMP. But I think the virtual low memory has to do with the amount of apps I have opened. Six so far, not including WMP.
