Low temp, general use(dsl, etc), light (old) games

Ok, before I start, I KNOW that athlons can perform better than celerons.

I just want to know what's a good setup for a celeron 1.7/1.8/2.0, maybe a SiS chipset (or anything stable). Not purchasing now, maybe next few months. Just need some outlook. Memory will probably be ddr333(pc2700), because of the minimal price difference.

I'd rather go for something reliable, stable, low temperatures. I won't be playing any of the latest games, and probably not even the ones released last year (2002). Mostly for general use (word processing, mp3s) and broadband.

I just need something to last approx 3-5 years, like my current Pentium2/300 has (in fact, come this december it would've been 6 years!)

As I said, please, recommendations. This computer will be in relative's home, and they prefer Intel. I don't see what's wrong going for lower temp and stability.

A Celeron is not part of any good setup. If your on a tight budget go AMD with a Tbred b, or 2500+ Barton and an Epox 8rda+ or Abit NF7(cheaper than nf7-s, no sata). If you must have Intel, avoid Celerons and pick up a used 2.0a p4 on the FS/FT forum and a BH7(they go for $80shipped at newegg). Any of these combinations would be $150-$200 and would be more than sufficient for your needs.

With AMD and P4 cpu's, you pretty well get what you pay for and sometimes a little more. Celerons even at their enticing price, is no bargain.

although in a more productive comment, if u have to go intel, get a celeron 1.1a tualitan core (sp?)

they run VERY cool, i suspect that celeron 1.7 isnt going to run as cool as u would like.... hell i think if its a willamette it would definitely run hotter as even a 1.1a celeron is based on a smaller process (0.13microns) as compared to the willamette (0.18)

plus the celeron 1.1a should perform very near to the 1.7 celeron as it has double the cache and a higher IPC

(sorry for the double post)

cow123, I can't get older stuff in my country (malaysia). Temperature here is more or less constant, and the room doesn't have air-conditioning. Worse, it's near the front of the house, and during the afternoon, the heat spikes up (not the pc).

Athlons are way out, and I won't be able to find the older celerons.

If I'm right, Northwood cores are the newest right? So, for my use, the ones with quadpumped 100mhz FSB should be good enough, no? (1.8 - 2.6 ghz?) Price would come down later, I guess...

One way or another, used stuff here are vampires. They're selling used P3/500(processor only) at higher prices than the lowest speed P4!!!
