Low resource DVD player.

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with dvdplayer software that would help increase performance on a low end system.

Interactual gives an error message when trying to play a DVD, and PowerDVD plays DVDs but on higher action scenes it slows down/gets really jerky. (hardware acceleration is on)

Does the DVD drive effect the movie playback performance any? or is it purely the low end system that's lagging the movie?

system i'm running it on.

Gateway Solo 2150
4MB ATI rage pro
433MHz celeron
168MB RAM
and i'm using an IDE-USB adapter to hook up the DVD drive (probably a 1 or 2x it's really old)
and...... WinXP pro ><;;

Yes, i realize I'm pushing the resources to the max... Just trying to make the most out of an old laptop. Upgrading of anysort is not an option for this.

Thanks for any suggested software or tweaks to get it running DVD movies more smoothly

So it's an adapter that converts the IDE DVD drive to a USB connection?

In that case, I'm pretty sure it's a combination of both the DVD hardware and processor speed. The DVD drive is old, and the transfer rate of USB1.0/1.1 is dismal. If the laptop supported the higher transfer rates of USB2.0, then I'd expect playback to be much better.
