"low profile" memory?

If the stuff without a massive heatsink is now called "low profile" then whats that half height stuff called? Lower profile?
 
I do believe that the 18mm PCB height is the low profile, so there is 3 sizes:
1. low profile
2. standard
3. standard with huge heat sink

Very Low Profile (0.72") actually. There is an even lower profile for blade servers, Blade VLP (0.7")... so I guess you could call that Ultra Low Profile... 😀
 
Is there a standards body, or official standards document, that specifies what exactly are the names that industry uses to refer to the different heights? I need to research this actually, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Only a very small minority of memory got heatsinks/"heatsinks". And alot of those that do mostly serves a bling bling factor, rather than functional.

Yea, memory heat-sinks has to be the most useless thing since (insert favourite here). I mean what's the typical TDP of a DIMM, ~2-3W...? :\

I think they're a nice addition. Not so much for heat, but for easy of handling and not having to worry as much about ESD.
 
what the heck is with the big heatspreaders. ram doesn't need cooling. Personally I think they look stupid.

I have seen this 16gb Corsair Dominator stuff that costs like $2000. It has massive spreaders with lights and aluminum fins.

totally lame.

I believe they hide the fact the memory chips are of low quality or are run faster than recommended, and heatspreaders are cheaper than proper chips.
