I currently have a 32 meg vid card in a low profile case on MSI mb with 512 meg of ram and a 1.8A P4 cpu. Can anyone help me find a faster video card with more memory as I would like to do some gaming at the office.:D

How could anyone possibly help you when you don't mention what your current card is, or how fast it is?

I don't understand the difference between low profile and other cards. They all fit standard PCI slots, they are all standard widths...

Many newer low-end cards (GF MX, some Radeon models) have a low-profile card height even if the bracket is full-size. If the bracket could be detached easily you could always replace it with a low-profile bracket. Of course you'll probably have to make your own cutouts for the connectors... hmm, this might be a good question for the case-modding crowd too.

I assume you've done some google searching already for vendors of low-profile cards?

AAO, he might have a low profile case like Plester's H300. ShifterKart the ASUS v7100 MX400pro would be faster, you'd have to mod the bracket or get a bracket from an old card and mod that.

If you modded the brackets, then I could see it working. Never came across a fast low profile card. I know the Xpert 2000s are tiny, but even the radeon LEs were never small.

Yes I am using a low profile case.....Metis from MSI. The bracket and card have to be low profile. I suppose the solution is to find a low profile card and mod the bracket (the PCI slots are standard). Msi makes a GeForce 4 MX 420 card with 64meg in a low profile size that could be modded but can find no info on this product or where to buy it. May have to call them.

Powercolor & Club3D are two that I have found wot make low-profile Radeon 7500's. Those should be the fastest available, even though this one is a lower clocked "VE" model. Perhaps there are others at full clock.

This computer is a kind of experiment for me. I used the Metis barebones system from MSI as a base. Here is the link http://msicomputer.com/product/netpc/MS-6231.htm The product description says it has the C-Media chip on board. This is wrong I believe it still has the AC-97. I added the 1.8A P4 Cpu (the Northwood), I used the HS fan combo that came from Intel (we will see how the temps run), 2X256mb Crucial CL2 memory sticks, 32x12x40 Lite-On CD-RW, FD, Maxtor 60GB 7200 ATA 133 (L) hd, and it comes with the GF 2 MX200 video card in the AGP slot. So, I have been trying to upgrade the video card and hoping to find help in this forum. The weakest link may be the power supply as it is a Delta rated at only 145 watts!! So far this thing runs great. Tomorrow I am going to do an official burn in and keep my fingers crossed. Th PS and the heat may be a problem. I have heard that these Micro ATX boards and the Northwood chips run much cooler. Any comment here??
BTW, after much research I went locally and bought the new GF 4 MX 420 from Visiontek (comes with 64 mb of memory), not the fastest card I know but after modifying the bracket ("cut and paste") it fits-----very low profile card. This is far and away a better video solution.:D

Good suggestions - Radeon 7500LE and GF4MX - both very fast cards. ;) If you can find them in low-profile or simply low enough to unscrew from the mounting bracket you're all set.

I should mention you should consider yourself lucky to even have MX-200 graphics right now! :p Many businesses would have outfitted you with something ... else. [shudder]

Why is it the cases I find the most attractive all have those @#$@#$^ LP slots?? I suppose mounting sideways requires either a proprietary board or an LPX riser... meaning LPX board. [sigh]

Hope more LP stuff keeps popping up.

For ages low-profile videocards used to be quite slow and the assortment of such videoadapters mainly consisted of low-end solutions, e.g. GeForce2 MX or Matrox G450. However, Gigabyte Technology decided that the users of small and nice computers should also have the latest technology for their service and launched its GV-AP64DL.

GV-AP64DL is based on the RADEON 8500 clocked at 230 MHz and is equipped with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM 5ns memory from Samsung that can be clocked not higher than 200 (400) MHz. Of course, this solution is slower than any RADEON 8500LE or even LELE, however, since it is from another market segment, we should compare it to the rivals from the same class. Hence, we can call this the most powerful low-profile videocard. The graphics accelerator is equipped with DVI-I connector and S-Video TV-Out. DVI to VGA adapter is bundled in retail package.

Gigabyte now sells these videocards in Japan under ASK Select brand-name. The adapter is priced from ¥19800 to ¥22800 ($150 to $173). Other Taiwanese manufacturers like CP Technology are also going to introduce their low-profile RADEON 8500 based board. In Europe we will probably see such solutions from Club3D.

firtol88,

yeah, I read that too ... I am dying to get my hands on the LP 8500. Has anybody found a distributer who would ship to the US?

cheers.
