Hi everybody

I really hope you would help me with my problem here

My computer is a new build, the specs are in the sig and using catalyst 8.7.

i think i'm having low performance in some games and all i want to know is why, in Grid for exemple my card performes less than my friend's 8800 GTS 512, something is definitly wrong, we have the same CPU at stock and he has a ga965p ds3, so basicaly i should perform at least 20% better than him but in reality he performs about 20% better. what's the deal?

even in Solar empire he has a constant 60fps while mine drops some times to 54fps.

However in vantage things seem pretty normal, i got about 7800 while he got around 5500, in 3dmark06 i got 11800 at cpu stock and 13500 at 3ghz.

if there was a hardware problem wouldn't vantage and 3dmark show a poor performance as well? specialy 06 since it uses cpu as well.

if my PSU is really the problem for not providing enough power wouldn't overclocking the cpu make it instable since it's already in the edge at stock speed ? i overclocked it at 3ghz and there was no problem whatsoever.

this doesn't make any sense to me except if it's the drivers...

to sum up about grid performance in just one particular shot in the multiplayer menu:

Mine vista 64 : 106
Mine Xp 32: 115 (catalyst 8.6 hot fix)
HIM : 125 (8800 gts g92 512)

we are running almost the same resolution with same aa

mine 1440*900
his 1280*768

as you can see his resolution is even higher!!

In race , my average is 60 while his is 66

even in WIC i'm averanging only 30fps while he hit 38 same everything.

Please somebody should elighten me this problem. what the hell is going on?

no problems with temps. (using fan fix)

Thank you very much in advance

What level AA?
What level AF?

Also I assume that PSU in your sig should be "Earthwatts".

Also is your friends 8800GTS 512 Factory OC'd?

Thanks for the fast reply
yes it's earthwatts sorry , the one it comes with sonata 3, i guess it's a good psu and should offer enough power to the 4870.
AA in grid and World in conflict 2AA, i forgot about the setting of AF but what i do remember is that we all had them maxed out, except for AA.
No my friend's 8800 is not overclocked and even if it's overclocked , there is no way it'll beat the 4870 in GRID, that beast is at least on par with 280 in GRID ! according to many websites... so how come it has lower FPS vs a 8800 GTS ... damn it.

Uninstall the driver then use driver cleaner then re-install driver. I've heard many people with HD4850 and HD4870 having similar performance issues only to correctly install the drivers for a fix.

Have you installed latest DX9.0C (June 2008), you can get it from here ,did you disable Windows Defender real time scan in Vista x64(I set mine to scan once a week).

You guys are both running low resolution for these cards to be flexing its true potential. On top of that your friend is running lower resolution than you are running which pump more fps. At this point it's really limited by CPU performance than anything else. On top of that G92 does really well with low resolutions compared to RV670.

I don't think you are having any problems with performance at all. I think it's supposed to be where they are.

Er, he's at a lower resolution. /thread.

You're right, but based on all the benchmarks of the 4870, it should still be ahead of the the 8800GTS 512. I mean a 4850 generally beats a 9800GTX/GTX+ in benchmarks...

@abasoufiane:

When you say the same levels of AA, what settings are you both using for AA? If you are using Adaptive AA on your card and he isn't using Super Sampling, this might explain why his fps are higher.

yeah AA makes a HUGE difference, the differnt kinds of AA that is

i was getting some lower framerates in WiC and turning off Transparancy AA in-game made all the difference in FPS.

+1.

Some people underestimate the impact of a higher resolution.

thank you guys for your replies , i'm very sorry but now i made a mistake about that res what i meant , his res = 1280*1024 .

still even if he's at a lower res, which is only one level lower, i should perform better, this is the 4870 we're talking about NOT the 4850, heck even this last card outperform a 8800 gts in most benches.
what do you mean by "adaptive AA" , as far as i know my AA in the catalyst is disabled , i enabled it ingame.

i'm still not sure about my card performing lower than a 8800 gts in low res, may be the difference won't be huge but from all the benchmarks i read it should not Perform lower than a 8800 GTS.
bear in mind we're running the same cpu clock for clock.

i'll try that directx june thanks.

any other suggestion pls? nobody here owns WIC ?

I have the 4850 and going into ccc and changing box filter to edge detection changed my performance ALOT. I kept the check mark to let application decide for the aa but change the filter.
