"Low miles" (591K) is a relative term ...

I was looking through my local Craigslist for some parts when I came across an ad for a tour bus (because sellers use a lot of unnecessary keywords). The ad read:

"With a low 591k miles, this coach is ready to be put right back to work."

So 591K miles is considered low miles? I guess when it's a tour bus and every mile means money.

That is barely 4-5 years of wear. Figure an average of 10-12k miles a month, or about 130k miles per year. 600k miles is only a few years worth of miles.

For the OTR drivers, husband and wife teams can do 600k miles in about 3 years.

Commercial vehicles are usually expected to run a million miles before they are put out of service, so yes, it's like saying a '99 Dodge Caravan with 59k miles has low miles.

The best I did as an owner/operator driving solo was around 135K miles in a yr.

Probably a more robust drivetrain but also I'm sure a lot of it is simply because the drivetrain makes up a smaller portion of the total vehcile's value than in a passenger car (I'm guessing, but it makes sense), so if you had a critical mechanical failure that would see a passenger car trashed in this it would be worth replacing parts for much longer.

The drivetrain is designed to be significantly beefier for a few reasons. The first is because many diesels are designed for vehicles that just rack up miles. The second is that the engine itself is beefier to deal with the high compression ratios. The last is the lubricating effects of the diesel, it helps lower wear on the cylinder walls.

Dont forget many Crown Victorias end up with at least half a million miles before they are scrapped.
Many get between 100 and 200 as a police cruiser and then sold to a taxi company and get another 300-400.
And some of those go to really poor or stupid people for personal use and get another 50.

Much less stop and go and everything is three times as big.

They also tend to be religious about maintaining the vehicle. If you did every recommended thing in your owners manual, always changed your fluids on time, and repaired things at the first sign of trouble your car would last much longer.

And as someone else said, maintenance that borders on religious fanaticism.

I was in a couple ford taurus taxi's here in toronto a couple months ago and saw that they both had almost 550k kms.
I nearly shat myself.

Cracks me up when I see someone driving a retired taxi that was retired from police duty...those things must have a billion miles on them.

Just as a comparison, I used to be a dispatcher for a city bus line here. Nearly all of our machines had fewer than 400k miles, and the ones over 300k had gone through at least one engine and transmission. The stop and go really does affect them.
