The original question
Will any of the below cards NOT minimally work with an ASUS Crossblade Ranger + Athlon 860K? This system will never run a game. All that is needed is 1280x1024.
- AMD Radeon HD 6350 512 MB
- GeForce 9400 GT 1 GB
- Quadro NVS 290 256 MB
A secondary and less important question is ... in the future I might possibly want to switch to a PCI (not PCIe) vid card. Surprisingly, I might actually have a different use for all 5 PCIe slots on the Ranger mobo. Other than that the performance is going to be poor is there anything in the AMD architecture or in the BIOS of the of the Crossblade Ranger or something with the Athlon 860K that prevents a PCI vid card from being used? Of course I could go with an APU such as the A10-7850K.

All of the above vid cards work OK in the Crossblade Ranger with an 860K. I tested each of the cards listed above with the following boot CDs/DVDs: Windows XP-PE, Knoppix V7.2 and Parted Magic (independant Linux distro). The test was minimal ... just boot the OS, open a medium sized window and extremely rapidly drag the window around the screen in a circle ("twirl").
Additionally, I took a GeForce FX 5500 PCI vid card out of a really old system that I still have and also tried that in the Crossblade Ranger / 860K system. It passed the test above, but while it did work it was kinda laggy/choppy in Win XP-PE. There was no lag under Linux. It might have done better under Windows if the proper drivers had been installed.
