Low FPSs with new 4870

OK, heres why the cpu, "OLD opteron 144 2.9ghz single core"

Fear,, Physics/particles Turned all the way down yield the same fpses @ 1680, 1920, 2560

around 45-55 fps. on all 3 resolutions

Something is causing low performance, I'm more/less going with drivers, here but I don't see an alternative for that.

Something similar happens in Grid where changing the resolution does not yield any difference. of 40fps

UPDATE

Ok, guys, new problem, My GPU seems to be stuck on 790mhz sometimes, even just during Windows, is this normal?, as i get some artifacting here/there, but it goes away real quick with no coherence to 500/790mhz.

For Fear?

Oh the grid thing, Yea but i don't have 4 gig ram, would it still fix my problem?

And I just found a forum with something about my exact problem, and It said to disable HID devices in device manager,, and i DID, and BOOM,, i get like 3x fps in Fear, Still drops to like 20 something when i'm dieingthough, but i figure that's normal. its MUCH higher now. I have no idea what the HID devices were doing to my game, but apparently they're a huge impact.

Will report back in a bit on GRID, Cross fingers

Nope, I guess I am cpu bound for Grid,, Too bad.. theres always next year.

HID = human interface devices, ie: mouse keyboard and anything else used to input to the pc's....

Isn't that the very definition of being CPU bound? When you change resolutions and your fps doesn't change significantly? When upping your res the CPU doesn't have to send significantly more data to the GPU, its your GPU that has to work much harder to keep framerates high. So if you're seeing relatively the same fps performance even when lowering resolution, it's usually the CPU that is bottlenecking the system.

An easy way to test would be to overclock (or underclock) your CPU and note the difference in performance in a game benchmark, preferably something easily repeatable like the World In Conflict or Crysis benchmark tools.

Actually your tests did isolate the CPU as being the bottleneck. Increasing the workload on the GPU doesn't affect your framerate, so your CPU is the limiting factor.

Exactly. If you want to prove the CPU *ISN'T* the problem, you need to turn it down to super-low resolutions, where the GPU won't matter much. Try it at 800x600; if you get a huge increase in frame rate, the graphics card can't handling your settings at high resolution. If you get a small or medicore increase, it's the CPU, RAM, hard disk (depending on how it loads textures, I know HDD was a huge factor in Oblivion and I believe Battlefield 2), etc.

Yes, especially when GRID is very cpu dependent. The more cpu power you give it, the better it will run.

You guys are so, uber negative, I already admitted to being cpu bound IN GRID. stop rubbing it in LOL. I'll tough it out for now without grid, next year or so when sc2,d3, come out, i'll get one of those fancy 4.0ghz dual cores.

You don't need a fancy dual core to remove the bottleneck. Any of the dual cores on the market will give you a sexy boost in performance, in quite about any game out there. You could get so much more performance out of a cheap overclocked dual core from AMD, until you'll get one of those "fancy" 4 ghz dual cores". But you didn't admitted that you are cpu bound in GRID, you just pointed out a "bottleneck situation", saying that there is something wrong, but it's not coming strictly from the cpu, it might just be from another place .

Repeat after me:" I am CPU bottlenecked, on my gaming machine, running in 2008 a single core cpu." 😛

Dual Core .. that is so right now

Well this seems normal. I overclocked mine to 830mhz and now it never goes back to 500 mhz.

This, though, is not normal at all. What do you mean "here/there", like in some games, or when it just sits in windows??

just in windows, like it'll flash by,, and gone like till the next day.

Not only is your CPU a bottleneck because of it's single-core nature but more importantly, your older DDR 400 RAM is limiting the bandwidth your video card is reverting to when changing out texture data. Once your card's memory is used up, it reverts to system memory and DDR 400 won't keep up at high resolutions and in modern titles like Crysis which has dense foilage, detailed textures to render.

Also, software overclocking will force a certain GPU/MEM speed whether in 2D(desktop/videos) or 3D(gaming) modes. If you're core is hitting it's max temp, it might throttle down to avoid heat damage and your gaming performance sucks all of a sudden. Find out where you card's OC limit is and then lock it in by modifying it's BIOS using RaBiT(ATI) or NiBiToR(nVidia)
