Low FPS with GF4 Ti4600

I get low FPS (low for my vid card) in Jedi Knight 2. Setup as follows.

XP 1900+
KR7A-raid
Leadtek GF4 Ti4600
2x30gb IBM in raid 0 (OS and games)
1x80gb Maxtor (Swapfile)

I get around the 9400 - 9600 in 3Dmarks 2001 SE

Jedi Knight 2 settings as follows for benching.

1024x768
Colour Depth - 32bit
Geometric Detail - High
Texture Detail - Very High
Texture Quality - 32bit
Texture Filter - Trilinear
Detailed Shaders - On

Video Sync - Off (off in drivers too)
Dynamic Lights - On
Wall Marks - On
Anisotropic Filer - On

Got 71.3fps

When running at 1280x960 (the res I play in) I get around 60fps (this is with the ffa_bespin bench)

Ingame I seem to get higher FPS but thats with other maps.

What could be wrong as when I look around these scores seem low.

I've tried the 28.32 and 28.90 drivers but still the same. My refresh rate is at 1280x968@100hz and 1024x768@120hz but I don't have vsync on anyway

If you're using the shadows that look more realistic (don't remember what they're called) but are pretty buggy, turn them off. They really bring down performance.

I know this has nothing to do w/your fps, but bring down your refresh rate a little bit. That's overkill, 85hz is where it should be.

I play at 1280x960@100hz and was only at 120hz for testing. Reducing the refresh rate isn't going to change the fps is it?

I can't find any potion for shadows ingame.

Ok heres something I can't explain. Using all the max settings I changed the res and benched at each res and here are the results.

800x600 71.2
1024x768 71.3
1600 x1200 69.9

Hmmmmmmm. Does this mean its CPU limited? I'm confised now as all I changed was the res.

This game is very, VERY cpu intensive. Check out Anand's sub $200 video card roundup. The GF4 4200 and the GF3ti200 are almost identical, while both have a steep increase with each increase in cpu speed.

The fact that your frames per second remain almost constant while going all the way to 1600 resolution should tell you something. 😉

Just leave all the eye candy on for single player, and turn off ansiotropic filtering, shading, and anti-aliasing for the multiplayer.

Why is that? I find 100Hz much more pleasing to the eyes than 85Hz

Ok I've found JK2 has a default 85fps limit so using the com_maxfps I set it to 999. Now in the timedemo I still get the same FPS but when actually playing in multi I get over 100 fps (never went above 100 before and yes I had vsync off). Rarely goes below 100 now and stays mostly around the 140-160 mark and I did see a quick 2 flash up once 🙂

Anyway this is at 1280x968 with everything on max and v-sync off. I also had 4x AA on at the time so will try again without.

The timedemo must be very hardware intensive.

Yeah I agree. I could have sworn 85hz on my desktop looked flickery but its probably just my eyes being used to 100hz 🙂

I'm sorry but I have to say it...

71.3fps is fine. Have we already forgotten about the fact that card use to only get up to 30fps back in the 3dfx days?

Maybe I'm just showing my age. Kids these days...

But since you did pay a whole buncha money, try this out...

Using the standard high quality settings, in the console type:

devmap ffa_bespin
timedemo 1
disconnect
demo jk2ffa

If you don't get 110fps or higher, send a letter to your senator.

Thats where I get the 70 fps in the timedemo. Although once I raise the fps cap I get around 140-160 with peaks at 200 in normal online play. The time demo still gives the same fps.

I had always been told that it was overkill, and just overstressed your monitor. But if it seems flickery, then you should probably keep it there. Sorry about that.

Did you correctly remove all traces of your previous video card?
Do you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your system?
Also check your driver control panel and make sure that FSAA isn't accidently enabled. Also disable shadows in the game.

Other than that JK2 is a very CPU limited game so most of the power comes from your processor (except in some cases it's almost entirely the video card doing all the work eg the swamp levels).

Reducing the refresh rate isn't going to change the fps is it?

No, unless you have vsync enabled.

71.3fps is fine.

Not for the rig he has.

I don't think anyone's forgotten just how crappy a 30 FPS slideshow is. In fact as time goes on more and more people realise this fact.
