Okay this is really making me mad. Okay I got this computer from my buddy and it wasnt a bad system so i took it. It came with two 6600 GT in SLI and i was like well maybe ill get some decent FPS, i came into the server and i was getting roughly 50-70 fps. Well it was kind of annoying so today I went out and bought a Nviida 9600 GSO 768 MB GDDR3 graphicss. I put it in and well im really mad because i got worse FPS, now i am getting 40-60 maybe 70 FPS on all high and frankly that is terrible, i read up on this card and people say they get 150-200 fps on all high. Here is my system specs.

Asus A8N-SLI-DELUXE Motherboard
AMD Dual Core 2.1
2 gb of DDR 400mhz RAM
500 gb HD
Nvidia 9600GSO 768mb DDR3

This is just a thought but maybe your cpu is too slow. Source games are very cpu dependant and css is not multithreaded and a 2.1 Athlon 64 ain't that fast. especially when you're on a 20 vs 20 server, things will slow down in that game.

not sure why your fps went down though. maybe it didn't? "roughly 50-70 fps" is very similar to "40-60 maybe 70 FPS". cant say for sure unless you ran a benchmark. one way you can tell if you are cpu limited is to turn down the resolution and if your fps doesn't go up then it's the cpu. also what is a 2.1ghz dual core AMD anyways?

You get about the same the fps as me? You are cpu limited.
Overclock that cpu and she'll fly.:wine:

Its your CPU. My 4200+ (2x 2.2ghz 1mb total L2 cache s939) got about the same performance with a 3850.

cpu limited, get a new mb/cpu/ram combo. AMD combos can be had very cheap these days and are a great bang/buck

Turn off Vsync? what's the refresh rate on your monitor? Mine is 60.. so when vsync is on i get 60fps.

My old AMD athlon 64 3200+ with a GF6800 would get 70's without vsync and everything on high. His CPU is more than capable of handling CSS?

yeah I lowered my core 2 cpu to 1.6 which would only be barely stronger than his 2.1 X2 and I still averaged over 220 fps at 1920, 16x AA, 16x AF and max settings. theres no way his cpu alone could be holding him to just 40-60fps.

well I think his point is that 40 is too low for that game based on the hardware he has.

40fps is low for CS:S, fps is different for every game. 30fps is playable for crysis, at least 60 is good for CS:S, i know i wouldn't like any minimum frames under 60

Unless you have an absolutely godlike CPU (and even then), you're going to be getting dips below 60FPS in CS:S on large servers.

Its not CPU limited. I ran a p4 2.4 and a 6800GT AGP then a GeForce4 Ti4200 AGP once my 68 died and got an ave of 40 fps with it going into the 70's. of course I forced DX8 and had everything turned off.

If you want frames over candy, turn everything off, then add eye candy a little by little until you get to your preferred FPS. Also, could be your rates:
cl_updaterate 66 (100 if its a 100 tic server)
cl_cmdrate 66 (same as above)
rate 28000

CSS is so customizable that you could play with all the settings to get what you want. Most cs'rs dont use eye candy, they prefer massive fps and huge pixels vs pretty (old) graphics. hope this helps!

my amd S939 4800+ Toledo @ 2.4ghz must be godly because that cpu didn't let my frames dip below 60fps.

I think I found your problem.
