I can see the most active General Hardware contributors have settled on the i5 2500K + GA-P67A-UD3 combo as the recommended low/mid gaming rig base.
For me this is $342.54, with shipping included from Newegg.
Another option is to buy the i5 2500K at Mwave, for $220.98 shipped (sadly, site down at the moment), then get the ASRock P67 PRO3 at Newegg for $126.98 shipped, for a total of $347.96, $5.42 more than the Gigabyte combo.
I cannot find a direct benchmark comparison between these two models. But, I think you will find that the Gigabyte P67 models perform similarly to each other, and the ASrock P67 models perform similarly to each other as well. ("thesis statement"). Dispute this if you disagree.
In the latest AnandTech article, the The Battle of the P67 Boards - ASUS vs. Gigabyte at $190, the ASrock Extreme4 was thrown in to most of the Benchmarks and beat out the Gigabyte board, and often the Asus board. Is the extra performance worth $5?
The main difference in features between the Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3 and Asus P67 Pro3 in the absence of a second PCIEX16 slot on the ASrock, therefore no ability to do CrossfireX. But is anybody really going to do this on the Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3, with its second slot in x4 mode?
IS there some other feature that precludes you guys recommending the ASrock P67 Pro3?
Let me know what you think.
