Heres specs that I believe fit:

Old 2010 high end:

i7 920 // 4 cores 8 thread, socket 1366, 130w TDP
Radeon 5870 1GB
6GB DDR3

New low end:

Celeron G1820 // 2 cores 2 threads socket 1150, 53w TDP
Intel HD Graphics // built into the CPU
4GB DDR3

Id take the old high end, because I game. If I didnt game at all.... yeah probably the new low end.

My old high end rig from April 2010.

AdamK47, that rig of yours was VERY High End! Nice. I'm still happy with the one in my sig that I built in Aug 2009, and of course upgraded a bit along the way. Haven't decided yet on my new rig. Either a top of the line i5 or perhaps a mid level i7.

I signed up but never got my tickets. :(

Pick up a used Q8400 or similar from eBay. That'll squash the upgrade bug for a while. I ran my Q8200 @ 2.8GHz 1.05V on my gigabyte motherboard for 5 years. I only upgraded due to finding the FX-8350 for only $125 and it'd be good for future resisting.

I'd go new, low-end in the laptop realm, where power efficiency means a lot, and you're buying a new battery.

For desktop systems, if there's a strict budgetary constraint, there's a lot to be said for last (latest minus one) generation hardware, bought used. A lot of folks out there upgrade every year or so, and leave a lot of value on the floor. I don't think you'd want to go four years old, but more like one to two years old.

I mainly use my T420, but my E6600 Conroe rig does just fine for my wife and for me when I feel like RDP to work using the 24" screen

I want to like the new stuff, but various deep-seated technical difficulties plus I say architectural decisions executed since Nehalem/Westmere & Windows 7 of the RTM version force me to stay behind on a Core i7-930 Bloomfield Alienware Aurora R1 A11 from 2010 (I have a newer, Sandy Bridge desktop & laptop that use the Core i3 of that generation, but 90% of my computing now is done using the 2010 Alienware Aurora & I desperately want to like newer stuff, but it's not changing in directions I like, can stand, or even can think about really; so that means I'm stuck on 2008 (backup laptop) 2010 (main desktop, netbook) & also 2011 (backup desktop, primary laptop) hardware.

For those who like the newest stuff, more power to them, but when the newest devices make me proud to hang my hat on 2008, 2010, & 2011 vintage desktop and laptop PCs; & fail to get me to covet those newer "replacements", then it's a situation where the choice is clear-and what a choice it does happen to be!

As to the original question about laptops, I'm a Dell and Toshiba user myself of 2008, 2010, and 2011 vintage laptops, except for netbooks where Acer & HP get me going (Acer Aspire One D255E-2677 replaced HP Mini 210-1010NR when I spewed Dr. Pepper into it); and I've got a good setup here, it's just I say that when Windows 7 is as useless on the Internet as Windows XP SP3; I won't know what to do, because I won't be able to wish aw ah the worst crap of newer "replacements."

Sorry about being so long winded, but if you want me to provide more logic, I will gladly comply.

Yes, provide more logic. Especially around the "various deep-seated technical difficulties" and the "architectural decisions executed since Nehalem/Westmere & Windows 7 of the RTM version"

As a person who went from a 2012 Lenovo Z585 laptop to a 2008 Lenovo T400 and I'm mostly doing office work on the computer, I have to say I really prefer the T400. I mean I still have both computers, it's just that I really prefer the higher resolution screen and the computer being quieter. The performance for what I do is very comparable so the older, higher quality computer really is better. Back in 2000 and 2001, a newer low end computer would really be better but now, thankfully, not so much.

On a desktop computer, yeah I'd choose the cheaper, newer computer as long as they're all equally upgradeable, etc. Build quality is pretty important with a laptop.
