My nexus 5 is having intermittent screen problems so I'm looking at a real budget device as a backup to keep me connected until I purchase an upgrade or fix the nexus. I'm going to replace the ribbon cable in the Nexus in an attempt to fix the problem but would like to have a spare phone on standby in case it goes wrong.

Along with calls/text i'll be using whatsapp, some light browsing and maps/navigation.

It currently looks like a windows phones offer better performance than android at the bottom of the price range, clearly apple devices will not be found here.

The Lumia 435 looks good at £37 delivered, are there any other devices I should consider?

Moto E/G. I've seen the previous model in the US going for $25-$40 USD.

The Moto E looks to be double the price of the 435 here in the UK. But if I can find a 2nd hand one on ebay I think that would be a better option than the 435 as I could continue to use many of my paid android apps, not a necessity in a back up device but certainly a nice bonus.

I went through the same dilemma about a month ago. I went to Kroger and bought a NET10 LG L34C Optimus Fuel for $10. Just signed into google and had all my apps up and running in a few minutes.
