Low 3dmark scores with a good system...

I have a friend that has the following system:

ECS K7S5A Pro
2200+
512 PC2100
9800 Pro 128
and average parts for the rest

I had a 2000+ and a 9700 Pro and got 12500 average in 3dmark. He's only getting 11200, and I can't figure out why. All of his directx settings are on performance. Had to flash the bios to get it to enable fast write but other than that I see no problems for this to be such a low score.

Anyone have any suggestions?

3dmark01 is benchmark of the entire system unlike 03 which stresses video card.

I realize that...but his system is pretty nice. The SIS735 mobo keeps up with KT266A chipests which is what I was getting those scores with. His current system is better than my old system, so he should get higher scores.

He's using Catalyst 3.8 drivers, DX9.0A, XP Pro fresh installation.

There's no doubt in my mind that he should be getting higher than that for a score.

Goto RUN command in your start menu then type in dxdiag.

Should bring up DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Goto the 3rd tab Display. Check to see if AGP Texture Acceleration is enabled. If it isn't, enable it. Enabling it should increase performance by 15-25% depending on card and application. I'm thinking may during your BIOS flash or what not, it may have been disabled for one reason or another.

Hopefully this will cure your problem, if not......

Check with the BIOS whether the CPU and RAM are configured to run 133/133 MHz bus. Oftentimes people forget to adjust that from its 100/100 default when putting the system together.

I know how you feel. I'm only getting around 17,000 in 3DMark2001 which isn't much more than my 'old' oc'ed GeForce4-Ti4400.

The key is your RAM Timings!

I was getting scores in the 3200's with my Radeon 9700Pro before I decided to check my RAM timings. I am running 1 - 512MB stick of PC3200 Corsair XMS on an ASUS P4P800-D. The timings were at 2-3-3-6 and after I changed the timing to 2-2-2-6... My score immediately jumped to 4762! I know that it could be faster since I'm bottlenecking my system by not running another stick of RAM in Dual Channel Mode, but the score is pretty decent for a stock system and 1 stick of RAM. I'll be getting that extra 512MB stick soon... I'll let you know if that helps out the score anymore.

Still hard to believe that something that simple could make such a big difference....

I just bought 9800SE despite all the warnings people have been saying here.
Vendor shipped Omega drivers with the card and I installed them.
So I dont know if thay speed up my card or not coze I haven't tried it with normal 9800Se drivers.

I ran 3Dmark03 and got little over 4500 is that good or bad?
Are those Omega drivers doing their job or are those normal points for non-fixed 9800SE card?

And another thing, everybody are talking about those RAM Timings, how/where I can check/change those?

mdk

For my softmodded 9500 this option is greyed out. Why?

That 3DMark03 score sounds great for a 9800 SE. I get ~5300 with my computer listed below (2400+, R9800Pro). And those settings can be found in the BIOS.

This does look a little low for a 2200+ and a 9800PRO. I was getting 11500's with a K7S5A v1.0/XP1600+/512mb DDR2100 and a 9700PRO all at stock speed. 3DMARK01 Make sure all of your Bios settings are correct (turbo timings), and that your ATI driver is set correctly. Your hardware should be in the mid to high 12's. I bet you will find something stupid holding you back like vsync or something :).
