louis is looking for a new 2 x 2gb kit

so i'm not gunna tell more stories about crucial RMA'ing. but in short, i've had to RMA 4 of 7 Crucial Ballistix dimms that cannot pass memtest v2.01 @ 400mhz, 4-4-4-12 @ 2.2v

anyway, i just sold my 2 working sticks of crucial 1gb ballistix and have been trying too hard to get 4 x 1gb to work on my DS3P

setup is in my sig, what are some good reliable DDR2 800 or DDR2 1000 kits?
i say DDR2 1000 bc i've seen some that are almost the same price as 800mhz kits.

been looking at the BLUE mushkin 2 x 2gb DDR2 800 5-4-4-12 @ 1.8v and the BLUE G.Skill DDR2 800 5-5-5-15 @ 1.8-1.9v. and lastly, the BLACK Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2 8000 5-5-5-12 @ 2.0v

all around the same price... of $70-85... which would u guys recommend? i'm not limited to those options at all.

Are you sure of the specs on that blue mushkin 2x2Gig 5-4-4 at 1.8V ? And is the Patriot DDR2-800 or PC8000 (DDR2-1000)? 2.0V for DDR2-800 is too high for me. All DDR2-800 (IMHO) should be running at 1.8V. Only the pre-OC'd DDR2-1000 and up should need 2.0V+ .

I've heard good things about the Gskill DDR2-1000, not too expensive either. Ditto their DDR2-1066 kit. Plenty of people have the OCZ reaper modules as well. I think most of the major companies RAM are all good, they all basically use the same IC's anyway.

I'm using the G.Skill you mentioned. I'd recommend it over any other right now. I do not like memory over 1.8v anymore.

i'm about to get that $85 no rebate Blue Gskill DDr2 800 @ newegg. unless someone has a BETTER SUGGESTION for the price

how is Gskills Service dept? i heard bad?

and why dont people recommend the Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2 800 2 x 2gb 5-5-5-12 @ 2.0v for $66AR? thats significantly cheaper than the GSkill

1 of my 4 sticks failed a few months ago and had to RMA the pair. The RMA guys were very helpful and I got a new pair within a week. Unfortunately, and after a few days only the new pair also failed. I contacted G.Skill (Europe) again and sent them the new pair back the same day quoting the same RMA # as instructed. I got a new pair within the week and a credit for the transport cost shortly after.

I know that it sounds bad having 2 failures in a period of a month but my mem is rated to work @1066 4-4-4-5 @2.4V. The bottom line is that G.Skill were there for me. It?s nice to know that you?re dealing with a company that stands by their customers.

#2 for G.Skill

JEDEC standards for RAM voltage is 1.8V. That is why most ddr2-800 RAM is running at 1.8V. The DDR2-1000 and up RAM is basically factory overclocked DDR2-800 chips, tested to see if they can run faster at a higher voltage.

The Patriot, since it is already running at DDR2-800 and 2.0V, means it's probably a lower spec'd RAM (maybe DDR2-677) that they are factory OC'ing to get to DDR2-800 speeds

My Patriot ram will do 500mhz at 5-5-5-15 and 460mhz at 4-4-4-12. That's pretty darn good for paying $63 .
I got a set of Mushkin Redline DDR2 8000 (2 x 2GB) on the way.

Over the last year i've bought 10GB of Corsair XMS2 between work/home use and have not had a single problem. That's two E6300 systems at work running 4x1GB each and my E2200 at home running 2x1GB.

I'm guessing you already ordered.

If not, i'd suggest the Mushkin.

You can't beat their support, & that kit clocks very well.

No reason why it shouldn't do over 500 MHz 5-5-5 (unless you get horrible luck).

Or if the DDR2-1000 G.Skill is still $90, that's a nice deal...should let you run 4:5 nicely guaranteed, as long as you loosen tRFC to 52ish+.

And as for 2.1vdimm being bad, i don't agree.

The main reason that 2.1V is "questionable" is because of the ongoing Micron debacle.

Not saying other chip manufacturers don't fail; they do, but the majority of the issues i always read about are from Micron.

Nothing wrong with 2.1V on good RAM...just Crucial (& many others) can't seem to figure out their Micron-based kits can't really do 2.1+V w/o dying eventually.

how is newegg and their REturn policy? i want to return/exchange my recently purchased&shipped GSkill DDr2 800 for something else... will all i have to pay for is the return shipping?

You got the 2x2 GB PQ DDR2-800 5-5-5?

Nothing wrong with that kit man.

It should do DDR2-1000 5-5-5-ish as well, unless you get unlucky.

I have that kit, & while it's not quite the same caliber as my more expensive Mushkin, it [the G.Skill] does around 500 MHz, though not much more.

yea, i did order the DDR2 800 5-5-5 kit, i just contacted newegg livechat and they said to refuse the package since its been shipped and i will be refunded the price i paid $84.99.

i just ordered the GSkill DDR2 1000 5-5-5-15 @ 2.0-2.1v from them.
anyone have any exp with this ram? what CPU/divider are they running it at?

oh and just FYI their GSkill ddr2800 ram shipped from their Edison, NJ. this may make some people happier if they live in the Northeast. i usually get mine in 24 hours from their NJ factory to NYC.

The DDR2-800 5-5-5 kit is basically the lower binned ones, so you won't see really high OCs usually, since the better ones get put into either the DDR2-1000 kit, or the DDR2-800 4-4-4 kit.

But they aren't bad at all.

But considering they were $85, & the better DDR2-1000 kit is $90 still i see...that's a much better deal, & the DDR2-1000 kit usually does 500-560 MHz, depending on luck, mobo, etc.

There's a huge thread on the DDR2-1000 kit on XS, & also one on OCN.

Anyway, based on you running @ 9x400ish, you'll want to do 4:5, or if your mobo does 3:4, then that'd be DDR2-1067 which you could likely do.

i got the DDR2 1000 kit for $80 shipped. how does this ram kit like to be undervolted? i've had very bad experience with crucial ballistix kits @ 2.2v.

i'd like to run these @ 1.8v if possible, will i still be able to get 1000mhz or 1067 mhz?

couldn't find the thread on XS (dunno how to find anything on their forums) can someone link me to good threads or reviews on the GSkill DDR2 1000 5-5-5 kits?

Not likely going to do DDR2-1000 @ 1.8v...

Maybe 1.9v, but you can experiment obviously.

You have to keep in mind PowerChips don't scale with voltage like D9GMH though...these are very different creatures that the Micron D9GMH you are used to.

Some people find over 1.9V they get little to no improvements.

But in general, for the PowerChips in all the 2x2 GB kits right now, there's basically no real need to go over 2.1V, as there won't be any improvement in clocking.

Keep in mind you will basically have to make sure tRFC is loose for you to even hit DDR2-1000.
I assume your sig is up to date...with Gigabyte's bioses, it's called "Refresh To ACT Delay"
I'd start out with that very loose, like 60.
You can likely tighten to 50ish once you've gotten the speed/primary timings determined.

when i get my G Skill DDR2 1000 5-5-5 i'll prob run my routine tasks which consist of (in this order)
1. reset cmos, set settings to 8 x 400, ram: 2.5x divider (1000mhz) @ 5-5-515, trfc 60. 2.1v
2. test one stick in slot 1, run 24 hours of memtest86+ v2.01
3. test same stick in slot 2, run 24 hours of memtest86+ v2.01
4. run 2nd stick in slot 3, run 24 hours of memtest 86+ v2.01
5. run 2nd stick in slot 4, run 24 hours of memtest86+v2.01
6. insert both in slots 1&3, run 24 hours of memstest86+ v2.01

7. reformat and reinstall windows, install basic programs and test with OCCT via RAM + CPU test

i know i'm missing some stuff from above, and/or doing unnecessary things. let me know what u guys would change from that?

and what kind of tests would u guys like to see in a mini review/benchmarking

my GS 2x2gb DDR2 1000 came today so i'm running my first batch of tests: Memtest86+ v2.01
cpu: Q6600 8 x 400 (just so i can get the 400mhz fsb + 2.5 memory multiplier)
memory: @ 500mhz (DDR 1000) 5-5-5-15 TRFC=54, 2.0v

will let it run for 24 hours on default set of tests.

what TRFC should i set when i'm running 2 x 2gb?? hows 60?

Why in the world would you reinstall Windows, or was that something you already had planned? If it wasn't, there's no need to reinstall Windows, just because you changed RAM.

54 should get you to at least 500 FSB/1000 DDR, and most likely higher. You'll probably need to give your NB a bump in voltage, though, to run two sticks @ 1000 DDR. Of course, if that scares you, most of the time you can just crank up the tRFC instead.
