loud wd2000jb hard drive

Hello folks,

Just got another 200gig WD JB drive, and it has a really high-pitch whine, even though everything seems to be working fine and I have copied some data to it without problems. Now, I have a couple of 120jbs that never had such a high-pitch noise, but I'm wondering, is this normal for the 2000jbs? Have any of you experienced this?

Let me know, I wanna find out if I should return this thing before it crashes, or whether the whine is normal. Thanks.

If it's really really high pitched, you may wanna check the drive out with Data Lifeguard to see what's going on. In any case, if it's really bothering you, you can RMA it.

Hi

i am sort of a noob to all of computers,

anyways
my hard drive is sort of loud to, not very loud, but when everything is quiet it is very annoying,

what is data lifeguard?
and is is "you can RMA it" mean?

also, is there anything i can buy to make it silent? maybe a hard drive cooler that also mutes it?

if it helps, i have a 120gig western digtal HD that is about 3 years old.

Thx

It's a common thing with western digitals it'll work fine but will annoy the hell out of you, I quit buying Western Digitals because everyone i got was like that.

hmmmmm.....I've got a few other WDs ranging in size from 40 to 160 and not one is this loud. Will check it out with Data lifeguard I guess, and will probably end up RMAing it eventually. It really is WAY too loud.

Yeah, some WDs will be fine and others will have this metallic z-z-z-zing! noise. I hope they switch to all fluid-bearing motors ASAP.
