Loud & Hot Desktop

I currently am using a desktop that I built a few years ago. It is extremely loud and heats up my room significantly. I am thinking about picking up a laptop to remedy that problem. I have never owned a laptop before. Would that solve my problem or is there a better solution?

Depends on the laptop. My C2D laptop's fan spins a tad loud, but not as loud as my desktop. You might consider building a quieter PC...I've found that the Antec Sonata II plus a good, quiet aftermarket CPU HSF does pretty well (if you're into gaming, choose a fanless card or a card with a quiet fan on it - read the Newegg reviews to see if it's loud first). The last 2 Sonatas I build were very, very quiet.

Laptops tend to get hotter than desktops depending on what you have in there. Can you tell what component you have that is making the noise and/or causing the heat? Might just need a better PSU if that's what's making the noise. And could be the video card or HDD or who knows what causing the heat.

Probably cheaper to replace the components than to buy a whole new setup.

THe laptop can solve your problem for the heat since laptops use more efficient and less powerful processors. If you get a "gamer's laptop" you can kiss those "benefits" goodbye.

For loudness, my laptop is louder than my desktop which measures ~ 19db @ idle and 23db during harddrive seeks (loudest fan is the Yateloon D12SL-12 @ 7V).

You might get better responses if you post in the GH forum though.

is your desktop "too old" for you? IF not, you can just replace the noisier components. This will be less expensive than buying an entirely new laptop.

BTW, i think dell desktops are too noisy. But, they are quieter than most other computers I guess.

All of the Dells I've purchased in the last 2-3 years are SUPER quiet. We recently got a bunch of Athlon X2 Dells at work and they are really quiet too.

laptops may get hotter in spots but they do not put out anywhere near as much heat as most desktops can.

if you pick your parts carefully you can get a quiet yet still powerful desktop that doesn't heat up your room much when just idling. when gaming it's going to get hot as top of the line video cards suck down power like a hummer.

Computer is plenty powerful enough for me. It's a P4 2.8C with 512 megs of ram.
It has an antec PSU 350 watts if I am not mistaken. Radeon 9600 pro. Nothing out of the ordinary to cause all of that heat. Maybe the 120 gig maxtor hardrive.

Well, all ordinary parts output heat :)

Heat is better out of your computer case though rather than inside!

Noise producers in typical computers are (in this order with worst offender first):
CPU Fan
GPU Fan
Mobo Fan
Hardddrive Seeks
PSU Fan
Vibrational Noise
Harddrive Idle
LCD Panel Coil Whine (similar in frequency to normal TV noises (12-14khz)
Coil Whine on Motherboard
