Actually in many places the uber wealthy can still collect assistance because they have no 'income'. Assets are ignored.

In fact this place the lady from specifically changed the welfare law based on another lottery winner.

She and her lawyer may not have known.

her lawyer didn't know ? no excuse. she's just an idiot

Who gives a shit if it was legal or not at some point in the past... It's just common sense. MILLIONAIRES DON'T NEED TAXPAYERS TO PAY FOR THEIR FOOD. To quote Pulp Fiction: She should have fucking better known better.

First she was not a millionaire, second as I stated you are clueless how the system really works.

Personally I say starve out the poor, if they matter their relatives will step in!

I don't think she should serve jail time, but I do think she should be required to pay back every penny she collected from the system & complete a thousand hours of community service. Fulfilling the requirement should include her telling her story to thousands of people & explain why it's wrong to cheat the system.

I have to agree i think Jail time is a waste. Give her a fine (perhaps community service hours) and make her pay back what she took +30% interest. Also she should be bared from any unemployment or food stamps for life.

Great job, Michigan - give her welfare that she doesn't deserve, and now pay more to incarcerate her. Brilliant.

And you think she should what? Get by free and clear? Continue getting welfare. She has the money let her foot the bill and pay it all back plus the cost.

Let guess how fast this idiot would blow off the lottery money and end up destitute within a short time frame.

Just like the old saying (paraphrasing), a fool and her money would soon go separate way.

It is a good thing that she blows all her money. People like that are helping get the economy going again by buying stuff.

Don't people in the states have to pay taxes on lottery? So its only fair that she continues to get welfare. She probably got like 200k of that 500k, that is only good for a couple years. Then again if she can't find a job or other income source by then she sucks at life. She also should not have admitted it on TV, dumb move.

Plus, if she's convicted of a felony, she'll lose her voting privileges. As she should.

Only while she was in jail. If she doesn't go to jail or after she gets out, she will be able to vote.

She won 1 million, took a lump sum of 700k, then the taxes dropped it down to 500k. She then bought a new house and car and paid cash for them.

Felony disenfranchisement

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felony_disenfranchisement

In 2007, Florida moved to restore voting rights to convicted felons. In March 2011, however, Republican Governor Rick Scott reversed the 2007 reforms, making Florida the state with the most punitive law in terms of disenfranchising citizens with past felony convictions.[4]

In July 2005, Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack issued an executive order restoring the right to vote for all persons who have completed supervision.[3]

Nine other states disenfranchise ex-felons for various lengths of time following the completion of their probation or parole.

As of 2011, only two states, Kentucky and Virginia, continue to impose a life-long denial of the right to vote to all citizens with a felony record.

That's a damn shame.

it was about $5,000 in welfare aid. now we get to spend countless dollars to prosecute her on the taxpayers' dime. only because the media got a hold of this story. anyway, who cares.

Apathy is why our national debt has doubled in the last 39 months.

Here is the Michigan specific info.

Can someone convicted of a felony register and vote? Can a person confined in jail or prison register and vote?
MCL 168.492a reads: "A person confined in a jail, who is otherwise a qualified elector, prior to trial or sentence may, upon request, register under section 504. The person shall be deemed a resident of the city, township, and address at which he resided before confinement. A person while confined in a jail after being convicted and sentenced shall not be eligible to register."

MCL 168.758b reads: "A person who, in a court of this or another state or in a federal court, has been legally convicted and sentenced for a crime for which the penalty imposed is confinement in jail or prison shall not vote, offer to vote, attempt to vote, or be permitted to vote at an election while confined."

Given the above restrictions, a Michigan resident confined in jail or prison that is awaiting arraignment or trial is eligible to register and vote. A Michigan resident who is serving a sentence in jail or prison after conviction cannot register or vote during his or her period of confinement. After a Michigan resident who is serving a sentence in jail or prison is released, he or she is free to participate in elections without restriction.

When this story broke months ago they said what she was doing WASN'T against the law and others had done the same and IIRC they pushed through legislation in a matter of weeks that changed the law. I'm going to guess that someone figured out how it was illegal in the first place. I'd think there might be some holes in this new found means of prosecuting.

Glad they nailed this chick. Pretty sure she'll be back on welfare soon. She doesn't look very financially intelligent.

In October of last year, the Michigan DHS implemented an asset test that prevented those with assets over $5,000 (they would also take the value of your vehicle, subtract $15,000 from it, assuming it was worth over $15,000, and however much was left would be counted towards the $5,000) from receiving food assistance. PDF link.

She also allegedly worked from June to October of last year, but did not report that income. link
