Lottery question: is it customary to tip cashier if you win?

Despite this particular cashier always being friendly and talkative I'm not inclined to tip in this instance.

Winning the powerball would be a different matter though...

Yeah, I think I'll go cash it in and buy $500 in powerball tickets. 😉
 
I wouldl never think of doing it (unless it was a $million+ ticket) but I have a friend who sells lottery tickets in a grocery store and she told me she gets $1 and $5 tips all the time when cashing winning tickets. Even she thinks it's stupid, since 99% of the people are regular lottery buyers who have lost far more than they have won.

She thinks it's part of the whole lottery player syndrome where some people just want to win so they can act like a big shot. They tip her $5 for cashing a $500 winner, and in their mind they are like Brad Pitt tossing a $20 at the valet for bringing his car around.

She has a regular customer who plays $20 a DAY on the lottery, and will tip her $5 if she wins anything over $100.
 
I tip 10% to the cashier who sold me the ticket...it is a small price to pay for "paying it forward". And before you ask...yes, i would do it on a very large win also, as I consider winning an abundant blessing.

Exception: You asked the cashier advice on which tickets to buy, and their response was "Well, I wouldn't really recommend any of them because they all have bad odds, but if you really want to then ...," and you actually bought the ticket they recommended.

You're "tipping" every time you buy a losing ticket.
 
Usually they're behind a counter or a cage, so there's no way to get a running start. 😛
 
Can't say I've ever heard of that custom myself.

Though I wonder how it feels to be a cashier when the person comes in with the jackpot winning ticket. I'm sure you'd have that small glimpse of hope they might give you like a grand or something just because.

The US is probably the most tippy country on the planet. Ive done some traveling and its amazing how many countries wheres tips arent expected. In fact, when I immigrated my wife, one of the things she said when she first got here is "why do you tip everyone for everything?"
