Lottery question: is it customary to tip cashier if you win?

Yes. Otherwise you're saying "ahahah, you just sold me a winning lottery ticket; you had $500 in your hands BUT YOU GAVE IT TO ME MWAHAHA".

At least give him something, like $1 or $5 or so.

You may have to send the ticket in to the lottery since it's so much, there's a form to fill out. At best the store would probably give you a check.

I worked at a convenience store for years, didn't get a whole lot of big winners and I can count the number of tips I got (and their TOTAL dollar value) on one hand - the cashier probably won't expect a tip, and you shouldn't feel bad if you don't tip them.

What's wrong with that?

I would get all of your winnings in one dollar bills and pin them to your clothes making a "500 one dollar bill suit" then walk in, point at the cashier and say "You can have whatever you can rip off of me if you can catch me within thirty seconds.". Then proceed to run around the aisles of the store eluding capture.

Good times for all!

Yea, but winning $500 and tipping $1 seems almost like an insult. I say that you don't have to tip, but if you did... it better be like $20.

Brief time I worked in a gas station noone every tipped me or any of the other people in the store and the workers there were overall pretty nice... So I'd say no.

I've never heard Lottery and win in the same sentence unless win was immeadiately preceeded by never. i.e. I never win anything in the Lottery. 🙂

Don't they get something from the Lottery itself? I know they do for big jackpots.

I have tipped the attendants at the Casino on the two occaisions they had to pay me by hand. (Slots)

What has the cashier done to deserve a tip? If your answer is anything other than "nothing," then they might deserve a tip. My guess is that all they did is take your money and give you a lottery ticket along with a barely audible grunt.

Did I miss something? I thought the idea behind a "tip" was to reward good service. Why would you tip the cashier for ringing up a sale??

Yeah, tip him. On the way out of the store tip the guy who holds the door for you. Tip the old lady who says, 'Good Morning!', the Postman, the UPS driver, the road worker and the cyclist who moved out of your way to let you drive past.

When you leave work, tip your Boss for not giving you the boot that day.

why? why would i tip the man for doing his job? its not like i can return a loseing lotto ticket can i? it not he had to kill a giant spider to get my ticket. he did nothing special.

Maybe if you won a million bucks you could slip them a thousand or something, but for 500$?? Most cashiers would not even expect it.

Looks like tipping is a hot subject. But didn't we already have a debate on tipping a few weeks ago?

Personally I would give a few bucks, up to 1% or something.

Are you crazy, that's like $5 in this particular case. I mean I'm not greedy or anything but $5 for handing me out the money that's mine anyway sounds a plain highway robbery to me.

I guess it would depend on how good a mood I'm in and how much I like the cashier. If the cashier is a standard grunt, I probably wouldn't give him anything if I wasn't in a particularly good mood. But if the day went well for me, and I was happy, and the cashier was nice and friendly, I might end up giving him $5. Who knows, I've yet to win the lottery.
