Lotsa work for nothing

I just went to try and convince my neighbour at the end of the corridor to let me install the rc5 client on his computer. He said he would do it if I showed him how to format his hard disk and reinstall Windows 98. So I did just that. Loaded his drivers, etc... Rather funny to see a P3 733 with a S3 Trio videocard 😉. Anyway, after about an hour of my precious time, I was about to install the TA Cube specific disk when he mentioned that he never plays games online because he doesn't have his computer connected to the Internet. 😱

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

He says that he might get an ISP and connect to the Internet after Christmas. So I left him the floppy.

What a waste. All that work for nothing... 🙁

Sneakernet is using a floppy to transfer buffers from a non-connected system to a connected one for uploading to the keyserver. I have several machines I do this with. You can buffer enough for a week or so, and just flush once a week.

The easiest way to do it is with Polo's great little creation, Sneaky.

Or, if he's going to connect to the internet eventually, and you don't want to barge in on him with a floppy every week, you could just let it crack randoms 'til it does get a connection. That's what I'm doing with one assimilation, and I don't even expect it will ever get connected. 🙁 There I'm using it in case the thing gets stolen (though it's only a 486-25.)

BTW, Dennil, yikes! :Q You look like ... like WombatWoman used to? 😕

In OT some people changed icons until Hallowe'en. 😉

Sorry Russ but no sneakernet for me. He has the setup floppy. When he feels the urge, he'll connect and install it.

Shoot, if he has a modem, couldn't you just have scheduler dial up to the internet with a free Internet account in the middle of the night?

Heck just get him on the net. If he's like us, he will be addicted in no time.

A P3 733 is a terrible thing to waste!

viz

S3 Trio? in a 733?? LOL!

dennilfloss, you could always set it up for him and just grab a really big "in" buffer from your PC. At least you'd get some work from it when he does go on-line rather than ramdoms. Like viztech said, a PIII 733 is a terrible thing to waste.

Sorry guys but I want as little contact as possible with this guy. He's a leech who wanted to 'borrow' my W98 disk to temporarily install on his PC, just showed up at my door asking for it and was insulted when I said no. Moreover the guy blatantly lied to me. I had helped him choose parts for his PC and later he told me that he had gotten a V770 for $280can, a US Robotics hardware modem and a 17" Zoltrix monitor. See my rant then. Now I find out that he has a 15" monitor, a 2MB Trio videocard and no modem at all, but that a lot more money got funneled into buying a P3 733 rather than a less expensive cpu (that was 3 months ago). Now he has a system that is basically all cpu and which he uses only for word processing.

No way. I want as little to do with this guy as possible.
