Back in the BC era when I took my permit test (say around 97-98) I remember there being a question, when is the only time you can "legally" go above the speed limit? I do not recall the choices and I'm sure that I got it wrong. What is the correct answer?

My guess is for emergency vehicles. Even then, it may not even be technically legal.

Pass at least ten miles per hour faster than the car you're passing while not exceeding the speed limit.

looks like i might be wrong. thats from teendriving.com so i don't know how legit it is. they may just be saying that because its for teens?

I would imagine medical emergency... taking pregnant wife to hospital or something like that.

doh, why didn't i think of this before?

the obvious answer is "when the cops aren't around to see it"

there was no None of the Above, nor was there a Medical Emergency

I always thought it was when passing someone.

it's safer to pass someone at 85 than at 65 if you are on a 2 lane and the guy is doing 60. I really like to book it when I pass on those, it feels so wrong to be in the left lane.

and did all of you really think it's legal to speed when passing (for those in the US)?

Absolutely. Pretty sure it is if it is a two lane highway.

I agree.

I know in Georgia that you are only "legally" allowed to pass some one if the are below the speed limit. If someone is doing 55 in a 55 and you pass them then you, obviousy, had to speed in order to do so.

no, you can't speed to pass

why would you need to pass if the person in front is doing the speed limit?

Wow. It is NOT legal to speed while you are passing someone. Quite sad that so many apparently don't know this.
