Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Crosley, Magic Chef, and Performa by Maytag sold February 2006 through April 2010 for between $250 and $900.Check here for models/serial numbers, etc.

"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled dishwashers, disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it, inform all users of the dishwasher about the risk of fire and contact Maytag to verify if their dishwasher is included in the recall. If the dishwasher is included in the recall, consumers can either schedule a free in-home repair or receive a rebate following the purchase of certain new Maytag brand stainless-steel tub dishwashers. The rebate is $150 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB7759, MDB7609 or MDBH979; or $250 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB8959, MDB8859, MDB7809 or MDB7709. Consumers should not return the recalled dishwashers to the retailer where purchased as retailers are not prepared to take the units back."

edit: sorry. Don't know what happened with the link. I believe it's okay now.

I gave away a maytag; I bet it was one of these. Kinda sucks as I bought a new one and could have used the $250 rebate. :)

Magic Chef is Maytag's bottom of the line, craptastic model. D:

Back in the late 90's, I worked a job for navy housing in Guam, where we warehoused loaner furniture (for people waiting for their household goods, or shipping them out prior to transferring), as well as the appliances the navy supplied to the residents in housing. We got all the appliances from GSA (general services administration), who contracts for large quantities of them, at a discount, for all government entities.

They decided that Magic Chef was the way to go, one year. The dishwashers would, on average, need to be replaced well within the 1 year warranty that was offered on them. However, due to the fact that we were 10,000 miles away from where they'd have to be turned in for any credit or replacement, the company pretty much got away with selling this crap, and not fulfilling their warranty.

About 1/2 way through the purchase contract, GSA renegotiated to pay a higher price per unit, and get the regular Maytag branded units, since they had so many complaints about the Magic Chef dishwashers.

I was just buying a dishwasher this past weekend. But Maytag was never on my list - I went with Bosch.

My parents have one. My mom decided just to get one of the $250 rebate models. She said that the hotline people for the recall are really pushing getting them fixed rather than getting the rebate.

Jenn-Air, but fortunately my model wasn't part of the recall. Well, unless they were willing to send me the parts & $25 to install them, then it might be worth the bother.
