Cats are easy to look after...
Let them out the house, let them in when they come back from their adventure.
Don't need to clean them.
Don't need to take them for walks.
They bury their own crap.
They sit on your lap (depends what the personality is like).
They sleep on your bed.
etc....

The only thing you need to give serious consideration is the cat hair problem, in my opinion. I have two large long-haired males, and there are times when the cat hair gets overwhelming. I sweep (hardwood floors, so I don't have to vacuum at least) everyday, but again, it's something that some don't consider.
People often excuse cats as having no personalities, but that's not at all the case. I honestly find them more nuances than dogs if given the proper attention. Get one, and as aircool said, do so from the SPCA or shelter.

Hear hear, same thing we've done for both of our cats. Also a lot cheaper, our oldest cat was I think $80 from one of the local animal rescue societies whose name I can't recall right now. And our youngest cat was $65 from the animal shelter. The prices include neutering/spaying, checkup, all tests, and all shots.

That is a big issue. I don't believe in declawing cats, so I have house damage from them. fortunately, I have furniture they do not scratch, but the molding around my doors is ripped up (cheap fix compared to furniture).
It's definitely something to think about before getting a cat.
Have you had an outdoor cat for comparison? Indoor cats are expensive too, even if they are perfectly healthy. Sounds like you never get your cats' teeth cleaned. Unless you are brushing their teeth regularly, that's probably not what I would call "doing the right thing" when it comes to their health. My cats are indoor cats and even minor health issues have cost a decent amount. Such as an ear problem which turned out to be just a yeast infection. Or tapeworms.

too bad he never noticed that the time changed.
my other cat is a fantastic lap-warmer during football season and always keeps me snuggled when im sick.
cats are super-easy to take care of and are excellent to have hanging around.
none of the "walk the dog" garbage, no loud noises, they mind their own damn business and only get in the way when tuna or shrimp is being prepared. it is true they are not mind-numbing loyal like a dog; they respect their owners as equals, not demi-gods.
edit: my cats are indoor and have had minimal health problems. they were all strays so...one came in with ringworm (fungus...needed a bottle of althetes foot cream) and a lung discharge which was about 30 dollars for medicine. we go for regular check-ups and everything has been fine. one cat is 14, another quasi-our cat (my sisters) is about 6 and the kitten is about 6 months.

If your cat is an excellent paper shredder, I feel sorry for anything in your house as it is probably torn up.
SOLUTION: Get scissors.
I would not want a cat to wake me up every morning at the same time, much less even get in my bed.
SOLUTION: Umm, buy an alarm clock or use your cell phone
If somebody breaks into your house or messes with you, wtf is a cat gonna do? I always have hated cats, but thats just me. You are much more likely to see a pack of useless stray cats than dogs.

Tell that to my cat. As soon as I go to bed, for about 15 minutes, he wails and moans. Also if I am watching TV for too long, he walks around the kitchen and does the same thing.
The only thing torn up in my house is papers that i leave out for the cat to shred. Also, if you actually use scissors to shred paper, then there is something wrong with you between the ears.
As far as people breaking into the house... that's the dumbest argument I've heard. You actually want your dog to possibly get killed by someone breaking in? I guess the only pets you like are pit bulls that bring you the paper in the morning or something.
The reason you see stray cats is because of idiots who let their cats roam around in the city without attaching tags or chipping them.
