They're about to relocate the data servers to a new improved location and will be eliminating many of the current realm servers. If you have chars in the game, may want to read up on it as for awhile they'll have free server transfers so you can choose before the consolidation happens.

How does that game actually work? Do you play through a guided storyline; is each "zone" area a self-contained storyline, or? Never played it so not sure.

There is a main storyline (called books) that for most expansions are f2p. areas also have quest but you need to subscribe or buy the area to have access to those.

A bit of both. The main quest is split up into volumes, which are then split into books. For the most part each book takes place within a zone, though some involve multiple zones or backtracking to previously visited zones. The MQ is all Turbine's own story, though there are some direct tie-ins with the plot of LOTR. Each zone typically has its own internal story that happens in parallel with the main quest events, and you progress through the zone by visiting a series of towns/camps/etc each of which will have a few pieces of the zone story as well as independent quests.

If you like LOTR then you should definitely play the game through before it dies. The majority of the main quest (probably all of it by now) can be done solo so that everyone can experience the story. I haven't really played the game since 2010-2011, I keep meaning to go back and catch up on the new expansions. If you aren't really into the source material though, it's basically just another WoW clone.

A couple years ago they adjusted so you get a power boost when doing the book quest solo that are designed for 3 man groups.

I have a level 19 hunter there I think from many years ago... I found hard to play the game because of the lack of public groups doing group content, the game always felt very empty, but I might check it again and try another server, thanks for the warning.

Do you have the link handy, I cant seem to find the info.

Personally been out of the game too for a long time. I think I had even purchased the last two expansions before the last last one and never got through them

This could actually be a good thing... You are definitely right, low level player count is very... sparse. I play on Gladden, not actively, but every 4months I play a month or so to see what is new. This could breathe some new life into the game.

That said, the game really needs a reboot a this point. Graphics engine needs a complete overhaul. The combat engine, too. Very, slow paced.

One problem with that is combat is also designed for group encounters and fellowship maneuvers. Hard to speed up combat for solo play and then have a fellowship try a maneuver while the npc gets to go crazy on them while they are stuck in the prep moment.
