1. Why is gandalf so afraid of taking that "other path" to mordor? Why is he so scared of that demon?

2. Saromon = Dooku?

1. Balrog= An ancient demon that is just scary. From what i remember, the beast is so ancient, wizardary does not work against it. SPOILER: well, maybe not, Later on Gandalf learns the magic of old after falling into the abyss with the balrog. The second book explains it. Its a pretty intense series.

He's not afraid for himself, he's afraid for the rest of the Fellowship. Gandalf can own anything in Middle-Earth if he used all of his power. To put it simply, Gandalf is kind of a Demigod.

Because he fears the rest of the fellowship will get their asses kicked by the Balrog probably.

2. Saromon = Dooku?
So it's the same actor...big deal...I don't see the question?

1. That demon and Gandalf are of the same race (Maiar), so it's one of the few worthy competitors for Gandalf himself...of course he wants to avoid it! Not to mention he believed that Moria was indeed overthrown (even Gimli didn't believe it) and probably thought it would be crawling with orcs. Gandalf's good but he's not invincible.

2. Christopher Lee. and btw it's Saruman.

The Balrog is a Maiar?

I knew he was tough enough to at least put up a decent fight for a Maiar, but I didn't know he was one.
Hmm the things you learn.

Yep, the only thing that was more deadly than a Balrog was one of Morgoth's Dragons.
Or an angry wizard ;)

Well...if the Balrog is a Maiar...essentially Wizard == Maiar, yes? The Balrog seems awfully angry most of the time. Seems like the Balrog pretty much is an angry wizard, yes?
