Was mount doom really the only way they could destroy the ring. Couldn't the elves have taken it into the west and maybe had it destroyed there? Just a Q having begun reading the simarrillion

Elrond's response was, they would not look kindly upon this in the west or something of that sort. in other words they wanted no part of it.

Also,

it was decided that the road west was being watched closely and that it probably wouldn't arrive at the havens safely

Sauron was a Maia, the ring was imbued with his life force.

to destroy it required great power, they might have been able to destroy it in the west, however, it would have required too much power, and probably destroyed part of Valinor

but, this is 2 ages later, things have changed, and morgoth is no longer a problem in LOTR

I think once, and mention as the old master of Sauron. but no where is shown in the present. that was my point.

How is one to know morgoth is "no longer a problem" by reading LOTR? Just because nothing is mentioned of him doesnt mean he's not still there running sh*t from the background.

Obviously now I know he's going to get his ass kicked, something which I didnt know before.

in that case the solution to your problem is to finish the Silmarillion soon, and re-read LOTR.

from what you have learned of Morgoth's personality do you think he would be content running sh*t from the background. I don't.

and as to him getting his ass kicked (your words not mine) reading closely in LOTR gives clues as to the end of the 1st age. I won't mention what those clues are, as you don't want spoilers

Not that I'm surprised that he gets nailed one way or another, after all there have been ages afterwards, but no reason to outright say it. Ah well, I guess reading the silmarillion without knowing how it ends is like going to titanic or pearl harbor and not knowing how it ends...
