Do the theatrical versions of the films come on these DVDs as well, or is it Extended Edition only?

Yup, extended only. I have both versions, because first-time watchers generally enjoy the theatrical release more.

Yeah thats true.

I'll probably just pickup the Extended Editions first and then get the Theatrical Releases later.

I was hoping you could view the Theatrical on the Extended Edition, so I wouldn't have to buy both. Oh well, guess not.

Thanks for the info. :)

Once I see the extended edition I really can't watch the theatrical one anymore so I just sell it.

I just got around to watching the director's commentary on the EEs. It's pretty good stuff ! :camera:

Plus there are more commentaries to watch, cast, production crews, and another one which I can't remember, so that's at least 4 more times to watch !

The "production crews" are split into two different commentaries -- pre-production/design and production/post-production

Hmmm, I only paid about $5 more for each of the Extended Editions compared to the standard version and the Extended Editions have a lot of insight on the making of the movies and the history behind the Lord of the Rings as well as JRR Tolkien history in it, too. Compare that to the standard fare in the theatrical DVDs. I wouldn't call the two extra discs in the Extended Editions to be junk.

The second one really shows the motivation and life of Faramir. It gives so many scenes to his credit that you really get to have some feeling for him (and what happens to him) in ROTK.

The soup scene was funny, but I understand why it was cut.

Also, will the EE version of ROTK include the fight in the Shire? I was waiting for it to happen then I got the sappy, boring half hour of saying goodbye. Because the end of the book is very important to the whole story (IMHO), I felt slightly cheated. Like the Empire Strikes Back, my favorite is the second of this trilogy.

And speaking of hobbits, we have tacit approval from the family. Next step, final approval. From IMDB:
Tolkien Great-Grandson Gives Jackson 'Hobbit' Blessing
Peter Jackson has some very special support in his quest to film J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit - the author's great-grandson. The director, who made a trilogy of Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings books to massive critical and commercial acclaim, is hoping disputes over the novel's rights will not prove an obstacle to making the movie prequel - and Royd Tolkien, 34, has now given Jackson his blessing. He says, "I would love to see Peter Jackson make a film of The Hobbit. That would be the perfect ending."

The EEs answer SO many questions and fill in many of the gaps left by the theatrical release.
