<< Is Russell Crowe going for his 3rd Oscar in a row??? >>

It's only his second oscar.

I'm listening to Howard Shore's "The Bridge Over Khazad Dum" right now. The last 90 seconds are simply beautiful. Enya did a lot for this soundtrack too.

<< This isn't the people's choice awards, it's the Academy awards. As in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The "popular" movie is rarely the big winner at the Oscars. The people voting on these awards are people who evaluate movies from an artistic bent that borders on snobbishness. That being said, while I like LOTR, you have to be realistic when there were better, more artsy-fartsy flicks out there:
A Beautiful Mind and Moulin Rouge, for example.
Expect LOTR to take a few technical awards. Maybe McCellan will win his award.
But it won't run away...sorry.
>>

It isn't based on "artistic bent" It's much more political than that. Spielberg just has to make a movie to win an oscar. Meryl Streep gets nominated becuase she is Meryl; Streep. Crowe won't win because he won last year, etc...

and maybe they won't give a beautiful mind the best picture award because the golden globes already did?

<< not to make anyone mad here, but by all accounts Ben Kingsley will win supporting actor. and he should. what he did in Sexy Beast was un-farking-believeable. did you all even see any other movies? should win most of them? i agree, it was a fantastic movie, but do you really think the same people who nominated Moulin Rouge will vote for LOTR? remember, this is your grandma and grandpa voting here. >>

I didn't find Titanic artsy fartsy at all. ;) :)

I would say that a Golden Globe often decreases your chance at an oscar.

LOTR should win best picture but ABM *will* win. It seems inevitable to me. The Academy has a long history of picking the wrong movie for Best Picture and they will do it again this year.

How on earth did Final Fantasy not get nominated in the "ANIMATED FEATURE FILM"
and "VISUAL EFFECTS" categories?

Optimus, I have to agree with you 110% (sorry Elledan :p )

As for LOTR...w00t w00t! :D They won't win them all but I think they deserve at least half of those. As for Best Picture, the academy will probably cheap out and go for the safe choice, A Beautiful Mind. Movies like ABM are a dime a dozen, but LOTR is the first of its kind: an epic fantasy film that's well done, not cheesy and works.
Nearly every single critic in north america liked the movie (link), so it's chances are very good. Even ABM didn't receive the same kind of praise.
Of course some people hate it...but some people hated Titanic and Gladiator too. You can't please everyone, but I think LOTR pleased most...and half of the haters want their false sense of individuality so they go against the grain and won't like what's popular. I'm sure we've all seen it before..

Go LOTR! :D

I hated Titanic and Gladiator, but I loved LOTR!! :)

edit- Looking at the RottenTomatoes link. I think we should hunt down and kill some of these critics that didn't like it.

For Example:

<< I'm heading back to the Harry Potter movie, which has fantasy and effects plus wittier charm, and some lives scaled to a human dimension. >>

What a tool!

Easy -- it sucks, and has no Visual Effects (mix between Live and animated action) whatsoever.

Not a record, but still impressive. (titanic had 14, and so did All about Eve) Hopefully it will win quite a few of the oscars it was nominated for.

Like when Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture? I'll never forgive the Academy for that one.

That was bad but at least a real case could be made for SIL over SPR. How about How Green Was My Valley over Citizen Kane?? LOLOLOLOL....my favorite Academy blunder. :)

Other bad picks IMO:
-Titanic over L.A. Confidential?
-Chariots of Fire over Raiders of the Lost Ark?
-Out of Africa over Brazil?
-The Greatest Show on Earth over anything (High Noon, Singing in the Rain, etc.)?
-Gigi over anything (Vertigo, Touch of Evil, etc.)?
-Around the World in 80 Days over The Searchers?
Many, many other questionable picks highlighted by Oliver and Driving Miss Daisy (<--ROFL). And that's just in the category of Best Picture, and only listing films I have actually seen.

And let's not forget film greats like Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, and others getting royally snubbed year after year. It boggles the mind.

The Academy is already on shaky ground this year with its nominations list (No Buscemi? No WAKING LIFE?!?). So when they inevitably screw up this year's winners just remember Oscar's dubious track record and you will realize how little the awards really matter.

Personally, I thought A.I. had the best score of the year. Harry Potter was good, too, but really didn't deserve the nomination. Zimmer's Black Hawk Down score was definitely interesting, but I haven't heard Amelie

yup, ai i still remember, harry potter was only ok, lotr soundtrack was bleh.
