What material are the bookends made of? They look awfully small though :(

Oh hell, I'm sure I would buy it anyway. I'm so weak :(

It is just a movie.

and a bad one at that!

For all the regular movie fans, do not worry, I am sure there will be a $19.99 version at target.

whaaaaaaaaaat?

That would still be roughly $19.99 more than I would be comfortable paying.

I thought the entire point of DVD's was to fit a whole ton of stuff on one disc. A dual layed, double sided disc can hold like 17GB, can't it? And they are selling this thing on 5 DVD's? I think things are getting out of hand.

I don't think you understand DVD and digital video at all :) So let me enlighten you..

Dual layered DVDs hold 9GB per side, yes. Double sided DVDs (AKA DVD-18s) suck ass...not only are the more fragile but the cost more to produce and have a very high failure rate in the factory.

This version of LOTR is 208 minutes long. Let's look at what takes up the space...remember the first two DVD are dedicated to the movie itself (18GB, and take a bit away for menus and stuff so let's say ~17GB to work with):

DTS 6.1 audio track: 1.2GB
Dolby Digital 5.1 track: 700MB
Dolby Stereo Surround: 350MB
Audio commentary 1: 350MB
Audio commentary 2: 350MB
Audio commentary 3: 350MB
Audio commentary 4: 350MB

= 3.65GB for audio alone.

17 - 3.65 = 13.35GB left for video.

This leaves us with an average video bitrate of around 8,700 kilobits (a little bit over 1MB) per second, which is considered good, but I have seen some movies that have 9,000+ averages. MPEG-2 needs lots of bitrate to work well.

:)

As for Discs 3 and 4, expect to see at least 6 hours worth of video in the bonus features, along with the audio...so 2 discs is needed. They are really packing this thing. No other DVD release out there will compare to it I think.

I'm worried that New Line will still try to outdo this release when they finally put out a box set of the trilogy in 2004.

They'll probably include R-Rated extended cuts of the movies to get people to buy them again because that's just how corporations work. :disgust:

I still want this though! :D

I'm wondering if I should pre-order from BB (using my free $10 coupon from Black Hawk Down) or CostCo B&M.

Amazon has the 5 disc collector's set for $49.94, then if you know someone else who wants it you can send them a 10% discount on the same item

Hmmn I'm a member of DVDTalk's Friends & Family 10% discount mafia so I could pre-order at 10% off.

Is the 5 disc for 49.95 the one with the statues? If so how do I get the additional 10% off? Heck only 50 bucks is worth it too.

yeah. you get the 10% off by having someone else buy it and sending you the discount. or you could buy it and send one of your friends the 10% off.

personally i will buy from a B&M because I am in canada and it's not really worth ordering online. Also, I want to make SURE i get it on release day...so I can line up before the store opens or something and if they haven't stocked the shelves yet I demand a copy :D

BTW, the same company who put together titles such as Toy Story Ultimate Toybox, Tron and Snow White Plantinum Edition will be doing LOTR. One of the guys who works at this company was quotes as saying this (got it from TORn):

"Incidentally, for those of you few poor souls actually following the DVD producer road rally, let me state for the record that my boss, Michael Pellerin, the producer behind New Line Cinema's monster DVD of Peter Jackson's masterstroke, has conjured up, Istari-style, the single greatest DVD ever created. Or will ever be created, with the possible exception of the other two films in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. A bold statement, I know, but after you buy the f***er in November (and you will), tell me if I'm wrong."
