It was the monster. Just as if you hit something invisible, with, say, the substance found in fire extinguishers (CO2 I believe), you can see the silhouette of the figure. Same thing happened with the TNT smoke and the monster.

Unless, of course, you're talking about the small, high-pitched squealer that we saw before they started running and before the big footsteps came. In that case, I don't know what that was. A mini-monster? Who knows.
