Obviously, the hatch opened. Otherwise Locke wouldn't be trying to hide it from everyone (like knocking Sayid out in the beggining). Doubt it'll open this season. It appears to be small, so I'd say some kind of homeostasis chamber where 'they' keep Jenova cells to replace the islanders one by one by some kind of telepathic alien clone.

This week. They're all new untill the seasons over in two/three weeks. The last episode is a two-parter.

I'm saying right now this is how the season will end. The hatch opens and someone goes inside. You hear "Guys, you have to see this" then "LOST" appears on the screen.
