My g/f's system suddenly lost all sound.
I checked Control Panel> Sounds , it is all greyed out.
I uninstalled all multimedia devices from Device Manager and rebooted.
Windows detected the onboard sound and reinstalled the drivers.
Still no sound,Control Panel shows all devices greyed out.
Checked Control Panel > add remove>windows setup> multimedia, Looks ok everything is checked.
Also checked the bios to ensure AC97 is enabled
I cant figure this one out, any help is appreciated.

Sys specs
Compaq 5000 series
Duron 900
256 meg ram
FIC mobo with onboard AC97 sound
Win ME

Did you try reinstalling the sound driver manually? There might be more than one place in BIOS where the sound needs to be enabled.

Yes i tried reinstalling sound card drivers and made sure the bios has sound enabled ,
Device manager shows working properly but under sounds and multimedia , record and playback is still greyed out.
Even tried a SBLive card and get the same thing.
Gotta be a registry problem i guess?
Looks like i might need to reinstall the O/S
