Uh, why did Charlie lock himself in the room and die at the end of S3? That literally served no purpose whatsoever.

basically, he wanted off the show.

for the purposes of the show, he did that so that desmond wouldn't drown in the station and because desmond told him that claire would then make it off the island.

i think. it's been a few years.

But since he knew that the ship wasn't coming to rescue them obviously Claire wouldn't be able to leave. And Desmond wouldn't have drowned in the station as he had scuba, or could easily have closed the door from the outside.

just because THAT ship wasn't coming to rescue them doesn't mean that some other method of rescue wouldn't have eventually presented itself and charlie trusted desmond's clairvoyance so he knew he had to die at some point.

but basically, he just wanted off the show. the episode where charlie recounts his 5 greatest hits is one of my favorites of all time.

My take on that scene was that SOMEONE had to be in that room after Mikhail's grenade in order to relay the message that the freighter was "NOT Penny's boat". If memory serves, if he hadn't shut himself in to "save" Desmond, they both would have been able to grab some SCUBA gear, but regardless of the underlying reason, I think they were trying to give Charlie a bit of redemption for being such a selfish, worthless, drug addict by allowing him a selfless, sacrificial last act.

The room shouldn't have filled up completely either. The water should have only gone up to the point of the window.

you've never been scuba diving have you?

every 15 ft of depth = additional atmosphere of pressure. since air compresses and water doesnt, the volume of air shrinks. assuming the facility was anywhere from 50-75ft below, the volume of the air would have shrunk to 1/5 or less. also unless the air is pressurized, at that depth you have a lot of difficulty sucking in that air, the water squeezes you lungs too much for your diaphragm to pull it in.
