My sons computer lost his DSL connection.
Both computers were hooked up and working fine for more than a year.

Both computers running Win98, using PacBell DSL, Netgear router, Netgear hub.

I switched NICs and they both seem to work. Both connections from the hub seem to still work, it's just one computer that can't connect any more.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Try rebooting the router to see if it work, and if that don't do it, then try calling the ISP provider and ask them to refresh their router ARP catch and/or your new MAC address. Also try plug the cable of the bad computer into a different port, or replace the cable.

I tried switching the cables from the hub to the routers.....and no go...both seem fine in my computer....

It's not the cable, cable works fine in my computer....just not his......

Will try router reboot... router reboot didn't help...

Son's computer can ping yahoo.com (only if you type in the address 216.115.108.245).....the pings get returned

well, if that's true...then it's some sort of DNS issue...you could try specifying some DNS servers in tcp/ip on your son's computer

It could be an incorrect DNS or Gateway setting.

Check the LAN setting to see if you have DHCP set both optain an IP & DNS to auto if your IP is dynamic.

Run winipcfg /all @ a dos prompt and compare the DNS of both puters to see if they are the same.

Also run netstat -r on both puters and compare the Gateway.

Just make sure that the computers are getting assigned at least one normal looking DNS address and a gateway address.

If they're not, you may just need to refresh your net connection to re-transmit the DNS info to the comptuer.

Sounds complicated, but it's really not. Computers are stupid that way sometimes.
